Cool your jets! @reactionengines have successfully tested their unique engine precooler to cool incoming air in excess of 1,000°C in less than 1/20th of a second. The tests demonstrate the precooler’s ability to successfully cool airflow at speeds of Mach 5, which is twice as fast as the cruising speed of #Concorde and over 50% faster than the #SR71 #Blackbird. The precooler consists of thousands of tubes extending over 42km. The tube walls are thinner than a human hair and have super chilled coolant passing through them, enabling 3.8MW of heat transfer – enough to power 4000 homes. Don't sweat it, following this significant milestone the project moves a step closer to the #SABRE air-breathing engine capable of Mach 5 #hypersonic flight and cutting the flight time from #London to #Australia to four and a half hours!
