Proud of working out for 2.5 hours a week? Well, you shouldn’t be according to a new study.
New research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests that what was once thought to be adequate exercise isn’t cutting it anymore.
To do so, the authors reviewed the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association’s suggested guideline of 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise each week, against a massive study sample over the course of three decades.
Sadly, they found that 2.5 hours of weekly exercise did not prevent high blood pressure among older populations. Conversely, participants who received more than 5 hours of exercise per week did evidence a significantly lower risk for hypertension.
“In 2020, prospective community-based cohort data of 5,115 Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study participants were analyzed. The cohort included Black and White men and women aged 18–30 years at baseline (1985–1986) at four urban sites, collected through 30 years of follow-up (2015–2016). Individualized physical activity trajectories were developed for each participant using linear mixed models,” the authors wrote in the new paper.
“Moderate physical activity levels may need to exceed current minimum guidelines to prevent hypertension onset using 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association definitions.”
After a 30-year follow-up, between 80% and 90% of Black participants and over 50% of white participants developed hypertension by the age of 60.
Observance of weekly exercise values varied between cohorts. Those who performed more than five hours of moderate-intensity workouts a week when they were young enjoyed some cardiovascular benefits 30 years later, but none as pronounced as those seen among populations that maintained this value throughout their entire life.
“Meeting approximately the current minimum physical activity guideline levels at age 18 years and through follow-up was not protective of hypertension incidence; however, meeting approximately twice the current minimum physical activity guideline level at age 18 years and through follow-up was protective of hypertension incidence,” the authors continued.
“Lower physical activity score (per 100 units) at age 18 years was associated with 4% higher odds of hypertension incidence. Each additional one-unit reduction per year in physical activity score was associated with 2% higher annual odds of hypertension incidence.”
Degrees of intensity is an influential element of the equation.
In an independently conducted study, participants who performed as little as 4-minutes of HIIT exercises three times per week experienced dramatic improvements in blood sugar regulation, cardiorespiratory fitness as well as reductions in liver fat roughly three months after the conclusion of the analysis.
The authors posited that these outcomes are comparable to outcomes associated with performing 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercises a week.
For healthy adults, HIIT is associated with increased muscle mass, improved stamina, and endurance, weight loss, and cardiovascular health.
The authors of the latest paper intend to conduct more research to hone in on a more precise moderate-intensity value with respect to sustained cardiovascular health among older populations.
“Studies have shown that exercise lowers blood pressure, suggesting that it may be important to focus on exercise as a way to lower blood pressure in all adults as they approach middle age,” says senior author Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine in a media release.
