  • A new test will tell you how creative you are by simply naming random words.

  • The test takes less than 5 minutes.

  • The average score is 78, and most people score between 74 and 82.

Creativity is a notoriously hard concept to measure, but researchers have developed a new test that requires only a few minutes to complete.

In a study published in the journal PNAS, scientists asked participants to name random words and then observed how different they could be.

The quiz, dubbed the “Divergent Association Task,” measures divergent thinking, which is a form of creativity aimed at generating different ideas in a short period of time.

Divergent thinking often happens at work when employees are asked to consider diverse solutions to open-ended problems.

“The test measures divergent thinking and verbal creativity, which are important but limited aspects of overall creativity. Our task won’t predict your creative culinary skills, but it will predict performance on various types of problem-solving, which suggests it is doing more than simply measuring vocabulary,” Jay Olson, a postdoctoral hello at Harvard University, told CNN.

How the creativity test works

For those that want to find out how creative they are, you can take the test right here.

Here’s how it works: You’ll need about two to four minutes to get throught it. It asks you to enter 10 words that are as different from each other as possible. Only single words and only nouns can be used, like things, objects, or concepts.

Proper nouns, specific people or places, cannot be used; nor can specialized vocabulary. You must think of words on your own and try to not look at your surroundings since that can influence you.

For my test, I named the following nouns: yarn, poems, hamburger, golf, runner, inhaler, headache, shoe, light and lip gloss (the last two did not count, apparently, becuase they represent my surroundings).

My score was 84.57, which is higher than 83.72% of people that have completed the test.

Each word designates a score that is computed by taking the average distance between each word — a measurement computed by “using a database describing how often the words are used together in similar contexts.”

Here’s what the test said: “The average score is 78, and most people score between 74 and 82. In our published validation sample, the lowest score was 24 and the highest was 96. The score theoretically ranges from 0 to 200, but scores above 100 are extremely unlikely. In our unpublished online sample, the lowest score we have ever seen is 6 and the highest is 103.”

If this test doesn’t give you the score you’re looking for, the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern developed a multiple-choice test that measures personality traits, attitudes, values, motivations, and interests that can also show creativity. You can find it here.

If you’re still worried about your creatvitiy, don’t worry: research has found the creativity can be learned by tapping into our emotions.
