Summary

This position is in the U.S. Department of Education (ED), Federal Student Aid (FSA), Technology Directorate (TD). The Technology Directorate provides information technology services for all FSA systems, promoting the effective and secure use of technology to achieve FSA's strategic objectives through sound planning, investments, integrated technology architectures and standards, effective systems development, production support, and cybersecurity services.

We encourage you to read this entire vacancy announcement prior to submitting your application. As a GS-1082-12 writer/editor, you will be responsible for:

  • Writing, updating, or reviewing content for web or print to reflect changes in law or regulations or as a response to customer feedback, analytics data, writer recommendations, or other internal/external recommendations.
  • Participating in or leading (where appropriate) the planning and delivery of customer support services, such as printing, distribution, translation, and design.
  • Working on design and layout of content; delivers required documentation, and providing quality assurance during the print process; ensuring resources are Section 508 compliant by reviewing and editing as appropriate and then submitting to the 508 testing team; and submitting resources and content for posting on websites.
  • Managing development of assigned publications and other content, including planning/managing the release schedule for publications/resources and website content.
  • Applying expertise in project management principles and manages assigned projects, including developing project plans and tracking progress, coordinating with stakeholders, overseeing budget and contract management, and reporting on progress.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has interagency agreements (IAAs) with other agencies to ensure efficient delivery of funded programs and activities and move closer to fulfilling the President's promise to return education to the states. Employees may receive detail assignments to these agencies in support of the IAAs.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

You may meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-12, if you possess the specialize experience.

Specialized Experience for the GS-12 One year of experience in either federal or non-federal service that is equivalent to at least a GS-11 performing two (2) out of three (3) of the following duties or work assignments:

1. Experience reviewing and editing federal or private sector publications to ensure conformance with federal and/or state agencies or private sector editorial policy, Title 44, and copyright requirements; providing technical assistance to authors and program offices.

2. Experience coordinating manuscripts through clearance, printing, and web posting, resolving conflicts among stakeholders and maintaining schedules to meet public-release deadlines.

3. Experience tailoring publications and web content to multiple target audiences (e.g., parents, educators, policymakers) and recommending improvements that advance federal and/or state agencies or business sector mission objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) The quality of your experience will be measured by the extent to which you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). You do not need to provide separate narrative responses to these KSAs, as they will be measured by your responses to the occupational questionnaire (you may preview the occupational questionnaire by clicking the link at the end of the Evaluations section of this vacancy announcement).

1. Skill in writing, editing, copy editing, and proofreading for public-facing content.

2. Skill in shaping content strategies and audience-appropriate messaging.

3. Knowledge of regulations, policies, and standards governing government or private sector publications.

4. Knowledge and skill to conduct research, verify information, and develops written products articulating and interpreting agency policies, programs, and research findings.

5. Ability to resolve conflicts and manage schedules with minimal supervision.

To help us evaluate your suitability for this role, you may be asked to provide three writing samples that demonstrate your skills in producing content for publications and web platforms. These samples should reflect your ability to communicate effectively and adapt your writing style to different audiences.
