Wind Technician, GE 1.5 SME, Melancthon

ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking a Wind Technician, GE 1.5 SME for our Melancthon Wind Asset. This position provides technical expertise and hands-on support for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of GE 1.5 wind turbines. The role is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving operational and maintenance issues while supporting effective maintenance execution and reliable turbine performance.

Working closely with wind technicians and site leadership, this role supports knowledge sharing, provides informal coaching, and promotes the consistent application of established maintenance procedures and troubleshooting practices. The Wind Technician, GE 1.5 SME contributes to continuous improvement initiatives and helps ensure the wind asset operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.

This role is based out of our Melancthon site and is a full-time, safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide technical expertise and hands-on support for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic issues on GE 1.5 wind turbines.
  • Support the safe and effective execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to improve turbine reliability, availability, and performance.
  • Provide informal coaching, knowledge sharing, and technical support to wind technicians, contributing to workforce capability and continuous learning.
  • Promote the consistent application of maintenance standards, technical procedures, troubleshooting practices, and operational best practices.
  • Support root cause investigations, reliability improvement initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts across the wind asset.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, Maintenance, HSE, and external partners to address technical issues and support asset performance.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, technical issues, troubleshooting efforts, and lessons learned.
  • Ensure all maintenance and troubleshooting activities are conducted in compliance with safety requirements, industry standards, and regulatory obligations.
  • Provide limited backup support to Wind Site Supervisors as required.


WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Engineering degree, technical diploma, or trade certificate in Electrical, Mechanical, Renewable Energy, or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • 7-10 years of experience in wind turbine operations and maintenance, including troubleshooting, diagnostics, and maintenance practices.
  • Relevant trade certifications (e.g., electrical, mechanical) or advanced technical certifications specific to wind turbine technology are considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Class G driver's licence.
  • Expert knowledge of GE 1.5 wind turbine technology and strong technical knowledge of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, control, and safety systems.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical support, informal coaching, knowledge transfer, and technician development.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including experience supporting root cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Sound understanding of health, safety, environmental, regulatory, and operational requirements applicable to wind generation facilities.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams, communicate technical information to diverse audiences, and build strong working relationships.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic operational environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and maintenance management and operational systems.

A reasonable estimate of the pay range is CAD$86,000 - CAD$108,000 at the time of this posting. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, relevant experience, education, and/or training. The top end of the range is reserved for individuals with exceptional, directly relevant expertise and a demonstrated history of strong performance within TransAlta. This range reflects base pay only and does not include our competitive bonus program and benefits.
