Job DescriptionWGL - Lead, Energy SupplyThe Lead, Energy Supply provides technical leadership for the execution of Washington Gas's natural gas supply and transportation activities. This role serves as the advisor and functional owner for gas procurement, pipeline scheduling, supply balancing and regulatory support.
You Will:- Leads the execution of seasonal, monthly, and daily natural gas supply procurement in a regulated utility environment.
- Collaborates closely with Gas Control to manage supply-demand balance, operational constraints, and emergency conditions.
- Partners with Finance and Accounting to align procurement activity with budgets, forecasts, and financial controls.
- Serves as the escalation point for operational decisions requiring cross-department coordination.
- Provides technical leadership to pipeline scheduling staff responsible for nominations, confirmations, cut management, and variance resolution.
- Coordinates with interstate pipelines, suppliers, storage operators, and internal stakeholders to resolve operational issues.
- Works with IT and systems teams to ensure accurate data flows and integrity across scheduling and tracking platforms.
- Leads analysis and oversight of pipeline rate changes and billing determinants.
- Partners with Regulatory Affairs and Finance to translate rate impacts into operational, financial, and customer implications.
- Supports enterprise planning and forecasting through market intelligence and risk assessments.
- Provides advisory and analytical support for PGC filings, testimony, audits, and data requests.
- Collaborates with Regulatory Affairs, Legal, and external counsel to support FERC proceedings and pipeline rate cases.
- Communicates technical and commercial impacts of regulatory decisions to senior leadership and affected business units.
- Acts as a technical collaborator for ESG and decarbonization initiatives, including CG, RSG, RNG, and hydrogen.
- Partners with Strategy, Sustainability, Regulatory, Business Development and external stakeholders to evaluate feasibility, pricing, and execution.
- Supports organizational readiness by training operational teams to execute alternative supply solutions
- Leads cross-functional process improvement initiatives aimed at automation, standardization, and data quality.
- Partners with IT, Analytics, and Finance to streamline reports, reduce manual processes, and enhance decision support.
- Develops documentation and training that enable consistency across teams.
- Influences outcomes through expertise, collaboration, and credibility rather than formal authority.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence across functions in a complex utility environment
- Proven experience translating technical supply concepts for financial, regulatory, and executive audiences
- Strong relationship-building skills with internal teams and external counterparties
- Provides day-to-day work leadership to analyst(s) supporting energy supply, pipeline scheduling, settlements, and regulatory reporting by assigning and prioritizing tasks, reviewing work products for technical accuracy and completeness, and providing coaching and knowledge transfer; supports skill development and operational readiness without direct HR or performance management accountability
You Have:- Bachelor's Degree Business, Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science required
- Master's Degree preferred
- 7+ Years of work experience, experience in natural gas utility and/or natural gas trading environment preferred
- 2+ Years managing people preferred
- In depth knowledge of east cost procurement processes for natural gas supply planning strategy for a regulated utility environment.
- Complete understanding of gas supply process specifically related to nominations, scheduling, confirmations, storage ratchets, contract entitlements and penalty provisions. Economic and financial analysis methods used to evaluate proposals.
- Ability to anticipate changes in the marketplace and discipline to develop contingencies in preparation for such possibilities.
- Builds and maintains strong collaborative relationships with internal and external partners
- Excellent analytical skills under extreme time pressure with incomplete information. Being able to retain and recall vast amounts of detailed numerical information.
We offer a competitive salary range of $114,000 to $166,450 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
