The VP of Human Resources is a strategic executive and hands-on leader who will oversee all aspects of Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, Learning & Development, Total Rewards, HR Operations, and Employee Relations. Leading an established HR team of approximately 15 professionals, this individual will build scalable systems, strengthen leadership capability, drive organizational effectiveness, and ensure every associate experiences an exceptional workplace from recruitment through retirement.
Success in this role requires an executive who is equally comfortable discussing long-term business strategy in the boardroom, coaching leaders in the field, and leading change across a rapidly growing organization.
Key Responsibilities:Executive Leadership & Business Partnership- Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to the CEO, COO, and executive leadership team on workforce strategy, organizational design, succession planning, leadership effectiveness, and organizational health.
- Develop and execute a multi-year Human Resources strategy aligned with Virginia Green's growth objectives.
- Present workforce strategies, organizational metrics, and talent initiatives to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Lead workforce planning to support expansion, seasonal workforce demands, and long-term organizational growth.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence throughout the organization.
Growth Through Acquisitions- Lead the people strategy for mergers and acquisitions, including HR due diligence, organizational assessments, workforce planning, onboarding, cultural integration, change management, and retention.
- Develop scalable integration playbooks that ensure consistent associate experiences across newly acquired locations.
- Partner with operational leaders to successfully integrate people, processes, systems, and culture while maintaining productivity and engagement.
- Support new market expansions and branch launches through proactive workforce planning and organizational readiness.
Talent Strategy & Leadership Development- Transform Talent Acquisition into a high-performing recruiting organization capable of supporting aggressive hiring goals across multiple markets.
- Strengthen Virginia Green's Employer Value Proposition to position the company as the employer of choice within the green industry.
- Build a robust leadership pipeline through succession planning, leadership development, mentoring, and career progression programs.
- Continue developing a high-performance culture focused on coaching, accountability, continuous feedback, and professional growth.
- Ensure managers are equipped with the skills and tools needed to effectively lead teams through growth and change.
Organizational Effectiveness & Culture- Champion Virginia Green's culture by aligning leadership behaviors, communication, recognition, and associate engagement across all locations.
- Lead enterprise-wide change management initiatives that support organizational growth, acquisitions, technology implementation, and business transformation.
- Develop strategies that improve associate engagement, retention, onboarding, and overall employee experience.
- Partner with Operations to create an effortless associate experience by simplifying HR processes and removing administrative barriers.
Human Resources Operations & Technology- Lead the continuous improvement of HR operations, ensuring efficient, scalable, and compliant people processes.
- Maximize the value of UKG and other HR technologies to automate processes, improve reporting, and provide actionable workforce analytics.
- Establish executive-level HR dashboards measuring key metrics including turnover, retention, hiring effectiveness, engagement, leadership development, labor costs, and workforce productivity.
- Oversee HR compliance, records management, policy administration, and HR operational excellence.
Total Rewards & Financial Stewardship- Provide executive oversight of Virginia Green's self-insured health plan while balancing associate experience with financial sustainability.
- Develop competitive compensation and benefits strategies that attract and retain top talent across field and corporate roles.
- Oversee the Human Resources operating budget, benefits expenditures, vendor relationships, and strategic HR investments.
- Utilize workforce analytics and market data to guide compensation strategy and total rewards decisions.
Employee Relations, Compliance & Safety- Lead a proactive employee relations strategy emphasizing fairness, consistency, responsiveness, and trust.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws across multiple states.
- Partner closely with Operations and Safety leadership to reinforce Virginia Green's commitment to safety as a core organizational value.
- Oversee investigations, policy development, risk management, and employment practices that protect both associates and the organization.
Human Resources Leadership- Lead, develop, and mentor a high-performing Human Resources team, fostering collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous development.
- Establish clear performance expectations and meaningful KPIs across all HR functions.
- Build organizational capability within the HR team to support Virginia Green's continued growth and evolving business needs.
- Create an environment where HR serves as a trusted, strategic business partner throughout the organization.
Qualifications:EducationBachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required. MBA, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent advanced certification strongly preferred.
Experience- 12-15+ years of progressive Human Resources leadership experience, including executive-level leadership.
- Demonstrated success leading HR within a multi-site, service-oriented, or labor-intensive organization.
- Proven experience scaling organizations through periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
- Experience leading Human Resources aspects of mergers, acquisitions, or organizational integrations strongly preferred.
- Experience managing self-insured health plans, executive compensation strategies, and sophisticated total rewards programs.
- Advanced knowledge of HRIS platforms (UKG preferred), workforce analytics, and HR technology.
- Willingness to travel regularly (approximately 25-40%) to support branch operations across multiple states.
