Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Veterinary Technician for the Office for Research.
The Office for Research's mission is to support the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of all Rutgers faculty. The Office accomplishes its mission by convening with academic and research leaders, providing integrated, user-focused resources, services, and tools, and partnering with faculty.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Provides veterinary anesthesia, surgical support, and clinical care for the University.
- Supports procedures involving a wide range of animal species and ensures compliance with regulatory standards governing controlled substance use, working in close collaboration with university veterinarians, the Veterinary Services Manager, and the Vice President.
- Performs as the lead technician on procedure days, assisting in surgeries, monitoring patients under anesthesia, preparing anesthesia dose sheets, maintaining operating suites for USDA-covered species, performing treatments, and carrying out diagnostic tasks typical of both veterinary clinical care and research environments.
- Performs training, observation, and monitoring of research personnel to uphold procedural standards.
- Performs a broad range of duties typical of both veterinary clinical care and research settings.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree preferably in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science and two years of experience in a laboratory or animal care facility or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience; or an Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited veterinary technician program with current certification as an RVT, LVT or CVT, plus two years of experience in a laboratory or animal care facility.
Certifications/Licenses - Certification as an RVT, LVT or CVT with the Associate degree.
- Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the level of animal technician ( LAT or LATg).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of farm and small animal species.
- Excellent verbal and writing skills, and electronic data management and reporting skills.
- Participate in the Occupational Health Program for animal workers.
- Ability to pass pre-employment physical examination.
- Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and communicate in the English language.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working in both small animal veterinary practices and the animal research environment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment - The position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs, twisting of upper trunk, repetitive and overhead lifting and reaching.
- The position requires the ability to stand or walk on hard surfaces for most of the workday.
- The environment includes potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, and the use of hazardous and restricted chemicals.
Special Conditions - This position may require work after hours, weekends, and/or holidays.
