Full Job Description
The Digital Services team is the primary business owner for two mission-critical technology systems for the City of Edmonton: the OneCity intranet (the primary source of information for City employees) and edmonton.ca (the primary online channel and service launchpoint for the public). This collaborative team effectively balances user experience, technological innovation, and business needs to provide seamless and engaging online services. We are seeking a highly motivated User Experience (UX) Developer who thrives on transforming design concepts into technical reality. In this role, you will bridge the gap between visual aesthetics and functional, interactive websites while following demanding technical standards. Balancing creativity and technology, you will help deliver exceptional digital experiences that meet the needs of all Edmontonians.

What will you do?

  • Create user-centric, accessible, and responsive websites from design mockups and prototypes using HTML5, SCSS, jQuery, and JavaScript frameworks
  • Develop front-end code within the Drupal environment utilizing PHP, Twig templating, and Drupal preprocesses
  • Apply Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to analyze web solutions, identify gaps, and implement strategies to meet high accessibility standards
  • Produce low- and high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes using UI/UX tools to test design concepts and gather user feedback
  • Collaborate closely with back-end developers, Digital Strategists, and creative teams to integrate front-end functionality and maintain design system integrity
  • Integrate data from diverse sources such as third-party APIs, spreadsheets, databases, and CMS content
  • Track bugs, optimize website performance, manage codebases using Git, and participate in code reviews


Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Media, or a related discipline, combined with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in the digital and web environment field
  • OR a two-year diploma in a relevant field, combined with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in the digital and web environment field


Assets:

  • Recommended experience in Drupal development and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Knowledgeable in using version control systems like Git
  • Desired development or theming experience within Drupal and/or WordPress platforms
  • Familiarity with emerging AI-powered design assistants and experience integrating generative AI tools into your workflow


Skills required for success:

  • Design & Prototyping: Ability to create functional wireframes and prototypes using modern UI/UX tools
  • Accessibility: Solid working knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Advanced proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, with experience in modern JS frameworks (such as React, Vue, or Angular)
  • CSS Architecture: Hands-on experience writing custom CSS and leveraging SASS or LESS preprocessors
  • Responsive Layouts: Expertise in mobile-first development, fluid grids, and media queries
  • Proficient in integrating Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Siteimprove (or equivalent), effectively tracking website traffic, user behaviour, and conversions to gather insights and inform data-driven decisions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot development issues, resolve bugs, and clear performance bottlenecks
  • Excellent professional communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators
  • Ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple workloads under tight deadlines

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance


Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary Range: $46.160 - $58.166 (Hourly); $96,382.08 - $121,450.61 (Annually)
