Full Job Description
Job Summary:

A diagnostic medical sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography to the radiologist.

The Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the ultrasound laboratory.

Reports to: Manager, Diagnostic Imaging

Hourly range: $34.02 - $57.98 (posted hourly range excludes overtime and bonuses which are not guaranteed)

Essential Job Functions:

  • Obtains and is able to integrate relevant patient history, laboratory results and previous radiology exam results for ordered exam, or request order change for accurate sonogram to be performed.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
  • Able to effectively operate the ultrasound machine to optimize images and adheres to department exam protocols.
  • Able to evaluate sonograms in order to acquire appropriate diagnostic
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Ability to evaluate, synthesize, and communicate diagnostic information of obtained sonographic exam to radiologist and/or attending physician.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the patient and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient's
  • Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
  • Coordinates work schedule with Radiology Coordinator, IMD and front desk to assure workload coverage and assist with scheduling of patients.
  • Maintains a daily log of patients, enters appropriate exam for billing, compiles appropriate paperwork for radiologist and patient chart.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment, supplies and work area.


Additional Duties

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements

Education: Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Active registration by ARDMS in physics, abdomen, OB/Gyn and vascular.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.


Experience: Two years' experience in hospital/clinical setting.

Physical Requirements:

The sonographer must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties. Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position. Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move a wheeled 410 lb. ultrasound machine, move patients on gurneys and in wheelchairs, assist patients with moving and ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for ultrasound scanning. Stooping, kneeling, and or crouching daily in delivery of patient care, obtaining equipment/supplies. Running occasionally in responding to patient care emergencies.

Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures:

Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical wastes, radiation, and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving mechanical parts. Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary.

ASH IMMUNIZATIONS AND VACCINATIONS REQUIREMENTS - Aligns with CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for Healthcare Personnel

  • Hepatitis B- Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Hepatitis B or three doses Hep B vaccine at appropriate intervals
  • Influenza- documentation of current seasonal flu vaccine (mandatory from November 1st through March 31st each year)
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella or 2 doses of MMR Vaccination
  • Varicella (chickenpox) - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Varicella or 2 doses of Varicella Vaccine
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) - documented proof of immunization
  • Tuberculosis Screening - Documentation of a two-step TB skin test within the past year OR lab verification of a negative TB Gold or T-Spot tuberculin test within the past 6 months
