Job DescriptionPosition Description:Our people division is growing, and we are looking for a Senior Safety & Health Specialist at our Turquoise Ridge Operations. The successful candidate will acclimate themselves to the work environment and perform duties related to the Safety and Health Profession.
Responsibilities:- Serve as a technical advisor and subject matter expert to site and division management on safety risk management, hazard identification, risk assessment, and critical control management.
- Lead and facilitate Team-Based, Formal, and task-specific Risk Assessments to identify hazards, evaluate risk, establish effective controls, and verify that controls are implemented and maintained.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve risk management strategies, processes, and tools to proactively identify and control significant workplace risks.
- Partner with operations, maintenance, and S&H professionals to identify high-risk activities and critical hazards and develop effective controls to reduce risk to an acceptable level.
- Provide guidance and coaching to supervisors and employees on hazard identification, risk assessment methodologies, hierarchy of controls, and critical control verification.
- Conduct field observations, inspections, audits, and risk reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of existing controls and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Establish and maintain risk registers for significant hazards and ensure appropriate action plans are developed, assigned, tracked, and closed.
- Monitor corrective actions resulting from risk assessments, incidents, inspections, audits, and other assurance activities to ensure actions are effective and sustainable.
- Support incident investigations by identifying failed or inadequate controls, evaluating the risk management process, and ensuring corrective actions address underlying and systemic causes.
- Analyze safety performance data, incident trends, near misses, observations, and leading indicators to identify emerging risks and prioritize preventative actions.
- Support the development and implementation of Critical Control Management processes, including identifying critical controls, defining performance requirements, and verifying control effectiveness in the field.
- Maintain a structured weekly and monthly overview of risk management activities, including assessments, control verification, audits, action plans, and other assigned S&H activities.
- Work with employees, supervisors, and management to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, MSHA, and company standards and risk management systems.
- Support division management during MSHA, state, and other regulatory inspections by providing technical expertise related to risk management and safety compliance.
- Participate in the development and review of Safe Work Procedures, Job Safety Analyses, Task Risk Assessments, Management of Change processes, and other risk-based safety documentation.
- Facilitate risk management reviews following significant incidents, changes in work processes, new equipment, new projects, or other conditions that may introduce additional risk.
- Maintain accurate risk assessment documentation, action tracking, databases, and compliance records.
- Maintain active involvement with division safety teams, committees, and workforce engagement initiatives to promote proactive risk management.
- Provide mentoring and coaching to employees, supervisors, and safety professionals to strengthen risk awareness and improve safety leadership.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, safety meetings, training sessions, and workforce engagement activities as required.
- Assist with the development and delivery of risk management and safety training, including MSHA-required training and site-specific risk management topics.
- Stay current with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, risk management methodologies, and emerging safety technologies and incorporate applicable improvements into company systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in safety, Occupational Health, Risk Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field with 6+ years of relevant industry experience preferred; or
- Associate degree in a related field with 9+ years of relevant industry experience preferred; or
- 8-12 years of relevant industry experience with demonstrated leadership and progressive responsibility in Safety & Health preferred.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 and applicable MSHA regulations required.
- Demonstrated experience in risk management, hazard identification, risk assessment, and control implementation required.
- Experience facilitating formal and team-based risk assessments in a mining or industrial environment preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Hierarchy of Controls, critical control management, and risk-based decision-making.
- Experience with incident investigation, root cause analysis, and identifying failed or ineffective controls preferred.
- Experience developing and tracking corrective actions and verifying their effectiveness preferred.
- Ability to analyze safety data, trends, and leading indicators to identify emerging risks and prioritize preventative actions.
- Strong ability to develop practical, creative, and sustainable solutions to complex safety and operational challenges.
- Strong communication, facilitation, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence employees and leaders at all organizational levels.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor leaders and employees in effective risk management practices.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines while maintaining a high level of organization and effectiveness.
- Proficiency with safety, risk management, compliance, and data management systems.
- MSHA Blue Card Instructor qualification preferred.
- Professional Safety & Health certifications such as CMSP, CSP, CIH, or preferred equivalent.
