SUMMARY

The Turnaround Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective planning and execution of all site Turnarounds, with direct accountability for scope development, schedule integration, cost control, and execution performance. This role is a major event leadership position focused on delivering high-quality Turnarounds that meet safety, schedule, cost, and reliability objectives. The Turnaround Superintendent drives a structured, disciplined Turnaround process, ensuring alignment across Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Engineering, and contractor organizations. The position serves as a point of accountability for Turnaround execution, ensuring work is properly scoped, planned, scheduled, and executed to support long-term asset reliability and business performance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include, but are not limited to, the following:
Turnaround Leadership & Execution (PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITY)

  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for all site Turnarounds from initiation through closeout

  • Own execution performance across all phases: scope development, planning, scheduling, execution, and post-event review

  • Lead the Turnaround core team to ensure alignment, coordination, and execution readiness

  • Ensure Turnarounds are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all company policies and procedures

Scope Development & Work Process Discipline

  • Drive development of Turnaround scope premise and ensure complete, well-defined work scope prior to scope freeze

  • Enforce scope control processes and manage scope changes after freeze with clear governance

  • Ensure compliance with established Turnaround Work Process standards and expectations

  • Partner with Maintenance and Reliability to ensure scope supports asset strategy and long-term reliability improvements

Planning, Scheduling & Integration

  • Lead development of integrated Turnaround schedules across Operations, Maintenance, and Projects

  • Ensure schedules are resource-loaded, realistic, and aligned with execution constraints and business priorities

  • Define and manage critical path and competing critical paths to minimize schedule risk

  • Partner with Planning & Scheduling to ensure job readiness, material availability, and execution feasibility

Execution Management & Field Leadership

  • Provide field leadership during Turnaround execution, ensuring strong coordination across all crafts and contractors

  • Drive execution discipline, including work prioritization, productivity, quality, and adherence to schedule

  • Identify and remove barriers to execution performance in real time

  • Ensure effective deployment and oversight of contract labor and service providers

Cost Management & Financial Accountability

  • Develop and manage Turnaround budgets, forecasts, and cost tracking

  • Ensure Turnarounds are executed within approved budget constraints and business expectations

  • Provide accurate cost forecasting and reporting throughout all phases of the Turnaround

  • Drive cost optimization through effective planning, contracting strategies, and execution discipline

Safety, Environmental & Compliance Leadership

  • Provide visible safety leadership and ensure all Turnaround activities are executed safely and in compliance with regulatory and company requirements

  • Ensure development and execution of comprehensive EH&S plans for Turnarounds

  • Reinforce strong safety culture across employees and contractors

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Serve as the primary interface between Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Engineering, Supply Chain, and contractors

  • Lead Turnaround Steering Team meetings and Phase-Gate reviews to ensure alignment and decision-making

  • Facilitate coordination of priorities, resources, and constraints across all stakeholders

Performance Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish and track Turnaround KPIs (safety, schedule adherence, cost, scope completion, productivity)

  • Lead post-Turnaround reviews to identify lessons learned and improvement opportunities

  • Ensure Turnaround plans, data, and performance metrics are captured and archived for future events

  • Drive continuous improvement in Turnaround processes, execution practices, and organizational capability

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 10+ years of maintenance, turnaround, or project execution experience in a chemical or heavy industrial environment

  • Proven experience leading major maintenance events or Turnarounds in an industrial setting

  • Demonstrated leadership in safety, execution management, and cross-functional coordination

  • Strong understanding of Turnaround processes, planning and scheduling, project controls, and cost management

  • Experience working with contractors and managing large-scale field execution

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills

  • Working knowledge of SAP or similar CMMS systems preferred Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing & pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.

  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office. Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators. Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
