Full Job Description
The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of trauma programs, with previous experience in a trauma-related department and familiarity with American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards and requirements. In addition, at least one year of leadership experience is required.

This position will primarily be onsite.

Summary:
Provides leadership to the trauma program in the emergency department. Responsible for the collecting, tracking and input of trauma data in the trauma registry. Provides trauma related educational programs.

Responsibilities:
1. Education- Plans, develops and presents in-house and local trauma-related education programs for emergency medical services personnel, nurses, physicians, other paraprofessionals, patients and families and lay public. Identifies learning needs and develops the overall plan for trauma related to continuing education activities. Coordinates educational courses on a regularly scheduled basis to assure that the nursing staff is able to meet State requirement of 16 hours of continuing education every two years. Interfaces with local and regional peers to keep current on emergency preparedness of the RAC's in the state. Keeps current in practice through attendance at conferences, reading journal articles and participation in web conferences. Provides leadership in establishing a statewide trauma system network.
2. Financial Stewardship- Develops a budget for the trauma program and monitors for any variances. Anticipates the program needs for the fiscal year, both personnel and operational and plans for the annual budget. Utilizes resources in an effective manner and uses evidence-based data to develop and monitor budget. Guides staff in the preparation of grants to the state for emergency preparedness. Serves as regional consultant and expert on trauma-related issues and maintains open communication with all trauma system personnel, including local and regional emergency medical services personnel, trauma center and referring hospital personnel, rehabilitation and trauma-related community resource agencies.
3. HR Management/Supervision- Hires staff to meet the needs of the program using Hiring for Excellence strategies. Coaches staff in the performance of their duties and consistently provides feedback to employees. Uses a Just Culture approach to corrective action to employee performance. Encourages staff in goal development annually and gives feedback on performance in a timely manner. Uses staffing resources effectively to meet program objectives. Monitors variances in salaries and keeps overtime variances to a minimum.
4. Leadership- Initiates, plans, implements and evaluates activities to support the University of North Carolina Hospitals? mission of providing optimal trauma care as defined by the National and State of North Carolina Trauma Center Criteria. Collaborates with the Medical Director and healthcare system staff to provide trauma services to patients. Develops outreach programs in trauma and injury prevention. Assures compliance with state and national standards for trauma programs and coordinates activities of the trauma program with those of other institutions and EMS organizations. Ensures program meets criteria for Level I trauma status according to the American College of Surgeons.
5. Registry Data Collection- Coordinates data collection of burn and trauma registries. Develops quality indicators for trauma program and evaluates outcomes for effectiveness. Develops and coordinates trauma interdisciplinary research studies utilizing the trauma registry database. Uses systematic methods of scientific injury to investigate patient care and nursing problems related to trauma issues within the acute care setting. Communicates research findings through education, reports and publications and integrates findings into practice. Writes and secures grants to support trauma research. Manages and assesses the integrity of the trauma registry and identifies opportunities for performance improvement. Develops objectives, identifies data elements, delineates the data-gathering process, identifies computer hardware and software needs and provides ongoing training and evaluation of trauma registry personnel.

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accredited school of professional nursing.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• Three (3) years of professional nursing in tertiary care and one (1) year of management experience in specialty area or a combination of education and experience.
