Summary

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection Headquarters, Mission Support Directorate, Logistics Division, located in El Paso, TX.

This position starts at a salary of $102,415.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $133,142.00 (GS-12, Step 10)

As a Transportation Specialist, you will be responsible for assessing and evaluating current, incipient, and potential US Border Patrol (USBP)-wide transportation and maintenance (motor vehicles & mobile wheeled equipment) challenges, problems, as well as their causes and resolutions. Typical duties include:

  • Evaluating and adapting techniques to measure and improve USBP program effectiveness and productivity
  • Ensuring accuracy and relevancy of data in Fleet Information Management Systems to include but not limited to SAP, VMIS, GSA Fleet GOV, GSA Auto-Choice, and FM-Live
  • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis to reveal data detail errors in databases and reports and performing needed corrections to restore data reliability and integrity
  • Administering sustainment programs to include but not limited to Electronic Data Exchange, Fleet Card, GSA Fleet GOV registration, and Home-To-Work authorizations and waivers

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Performing long-range planning and the development of organizational strategies to meet program objectives and mission
  • Conducting studies and analyses of motor vehicle fleet and mobile equipment requirements
  • Providing quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques to develop reports and projects relating to fleet management
  • Coordinating transportation and maintenance activities and making recommendations to improve fleet operations
  • Preparing a variety of analytical reports, surveys, memoranda, and technical documents on motor vehicle and mobile equipment fleet management issues

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:

  • Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military

  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government


Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
