Position Scope

 

The Transportation Safety Advisor is responsible for supporting the organization's transportation safety, occupational health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs through the effective management of commercial fleet regulatory compliance and the promotion of industry-leading safety practices across all operations.

The successful candidate will foster a proactive and engaged safety culture, maintain fleet compliance and audit readiness, promote operational excellence, and support the organization's commitment to protecting people, property, the environment, and its reputation through effective risk management and leadership.

 

This role has a shift schedule of 9x5.

Responsibilities

What You'll Be Doing

  • Maintain the organization's National Safety Code (NSC) compliance program through effective management of driver qualification files, fleet and maintenance records, hours-of-service requirements, carrier profile performance, regulatory reporting, and transportation-related training programs.
  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSE and transportation safety programs to ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and corporate requirements.
  • Partner with operational leaders to strengthen safety culture through coaching, mentoring, performance feedback, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and field observations to identify risks, verify compliance, and support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to employees, supervisors, and contractors on transportation safety, occupational health and safety, environmental requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Facilitate and support incident investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective action development, and organizational learning to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on transportation and HSE performance, including leading and lagging indicators, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Support project planning and operational activities by participating in risk assessments, job planning, emergency preparedness, and the development of site-specific safety strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to transportation compliance, training, incidents, audits, inspections, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with employees, leaders, contractors, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders to support transportation and HSE objectives. 
  • Plan, conduct, and participate in internal and external transportation safety and HSE audits; track findings, coordinate corrective actions, and monitor the effectiveness of improvement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and support to leaders in the preparation, facilitation, and effectiveness of safety meetings, toolbox talks, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Deliver transportation safety, HSE, orientation, and competency-based training programs, including coaching and mentoring of employees and supervisors.
Qualifications

What Makes You the ONE

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of progressive experience directly managing commercial vehicle fleet safety combined with industrial, construction and or mining industry safety experience.
  • Certificate, diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent post-secondary

    education.

  • Accreditation as an OH&S professional (i.e. CRSP, CRST, CHSC, NEBOSH, CSP, NCSO).

  • Accreditation as a Transportation Safety Professional (i.e. CTSC, CTSP) preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of National Safety Code (NSC) standards, Alberta Traffic Safety Act, Hours of, Service, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of applicable Federal and Provincial Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation and regulations.

  • Working knowledge of HSE management systems, risk assessment, auditing, and incident investigation processes.

  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, standards, policies, and procedures in operational environments.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and facilitation skills.

  • Proven ability to coach, influence, and build effective working relationships at all organizational levels.

  • Ability to understand operational priorities and align safety initiatives with business objectives.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to lead or support hazard assessments, inspections, audits, incident investigations, and corrective action processes.

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize safety management, fleet management, and other business software applications.

  • Working knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and atmospheric monitoring equipment is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, integrity, and a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.

  • Subject to Random Testing at: Suncor, Suncor Fort Hills and Kearl sites

    • Fitness-to-Work Assessment
    • Audiometric Testing
