Job Responsibilities

At Sumter Construction, monitors highway and bridge construction projects (i. e. asphalt, concrete, earth types-bases, macadam, pipe, under drain, pile driving, form setting, reinfored steel and compacation with nuclear guage, etc.), contractor's productivity, utility conflicts, project scope and other impacts due to construction. Ensures that all projects achieve a safe work zone for motorist and construction personnel. Provides contractors and inspectors with the proper installation instruction, inspection, and maintenance of erosion prevention devices and sediment control protection devices on SCDOT construction sites. Prepares and reviews field notes and material sampling reports to include final plans. Also prepares daily work reports in Site Manager and AASHTO-Ware Project, utility diaries, monthly estimates worksheets, daily asphalt roadway reports, erosion, and traffic control reports, sample cards and other necessary paperwork including the computation of areas of cross-sections and the calculation of volumes. Serves as SCDOT representative to public when discussing construction project/plans. Interprets and provides explanation to inspectors on construction plans and contract notes. Uses surveying software with data collector and total station for checking contractor's lines and grades. Computes and creates volumes of borrow and waste pits. Supervises sampling and testing of construction materials for quality to ensure that materials are in compliance with specifications. Obtains material certifications as needed. Maintain material samples and certification log books for projects. Assists the Resident Construction Engineer as needed. Maintain all current technician certifications. Obtain certifications as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.

Additional Comments

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
