Job Description:
This position involves the exercise of independent judgment assisting in the supervision of engineers and other staff in traffic engineering and operations. The work is performed independently and subject to review by the State Traffic Engineer (STE) and the Assistant State Traffic Engineer (ASTE).
Assists the STE in Traffic Analysis Management and Evaluation (TAMEing) and Maintenance of Traffic Plan review on all projects. Responsibilities will include running and providing direction to the monthly TAMEing meeting, developing TAMEing certifications, instituting associated policies, and developing the methodologies/procedures to implement TAMEing requirements. This position oversees the preparation of TAMEing specifications for all projects and training on TAMEing and Maintenance of Traffic Plans. This position will be a primary point of contact in the Department for work zone safety, including formal work zone safety reviews, and safety initiative coordination with appropriate stakeholders.
This position acts as the engineering supervisor for Transportation Management Center (TMC) staff which operates 24/7 at MaineDOT headquarters. Work involves support for staff needs, real-time operational issues, and assistance with the Emergency Operations Center when necessary. This position will be serving as one of the duty officers for the TMC, a rotating responsibility to communicate significant incidents to relevant MaineDOT leadership. This position will also support statewide Transportation Incident Management (TIM) efforts, including coordinating with TIM trainers and assisting with acquisition of incident management field safety devices.
Acts as liaison with Bureau of Motor Vehicles on Oversized loads (reviews permit applications and comments on proposed routes). Supports the preparation of plans and specifications for traffic engineering related projects. Receives requests and complaints from legislators, local officials, private citizens, commercial interests and other state agencies. The position is responsible for investigation of complaints/problems, as well as working out resolution to those issues. Acts as part of the traffic management/leadership team taking part in staff and project meetings.
To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:
Licensure as a Professional Engineer plus two (2) years of work experience beyond such licensure which demonstrates the performance of significantly complex engineering science, competency in evaluating risk, and applying sound engineering judgement as it applies to planning, project development, and/or maintenance of public works structures and facilities.
Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:
Licensure as a Professional Engineer as issued by the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.
