Transmission Line Design Supervisor (East)

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing leadership, guidance and direction for a Transmission Line Design team within the Engineering Department of the Technical and Project Solutions group. The Transmission Line Design Department is responsible for the engineering, design, and coordination of transmission line projects. This position will also support construction activities, assist in resolving operational or maintenance problems/issues, and serve as a resource in emergency restoration of failed equipment. This position will be responsible for projects in the State of Georgia, including some associated with the Integrated Transmission System (ITS) participants.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create a safe work environment through total personal commitment to safety
  • Lead the activities of the Transmission Line Design group to ensure all projects are designed to achieve greatest total value to Southern Company utilizing Southern Company Transmission standards. This includes development and production of engineering documents, including preliminary design, job specifications, drawings, bills of material and ordering of materials pertaining to Transmission Line design to ensure that projects are designed efficiently and on schedule
  • Select, develop, and manage the performance of departmental employees in both a virtual and office setting
  • Participate in, support, and lead (as appropriate) Southern Company activities and initiatives
  • Develop and support a strong and effective team environment
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of transmission line design operations, guidelines, and procedures
  • Support the development of design standards and criteria for use on the Southern Company System
  • Responsible for scheduling the group's activities for capital projects and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Provide technical support to Transmission Maintenance & Construction personnel as requested


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • BS in Engineering is strongly preferred (Civil, Mechanical or Electrical preferred) or 4-year technical degree with applicable experience
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is strongly preferred


Experience:
  • Transmission Line Design experience preferred
  • Transmission Line Maintenance, Construction and/or Distribution experience a plus
  • Experience working across Operating Companies and/or functional boundaries a plus
  • Formal performance management (people leadership) is preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proven ability to successfully implement and lead safe work behaviors in the workplace
  • Comprehensive knowledge of overall transmission line design and maintenance practices, with specific expertise in line design and construction materials
  • Knowledge of current design practices and procedures
  • Strong leadership skills across a broad spectrum
  • Thorough knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code
  • Proven effective interpersonal, analytical, communication, teamwork, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships in both a virtual and office setting

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
  • This position will be based out of General Services HQ in Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta).
  • Work schedule (in-office, field and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • This position will require occasional travel (approximately 25%).
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
