Director of Maintenance & Construction

Travers Island

Reports To: Assistant General Manager

Position Summary

The Director of Maintenance & Construction is responsible for the overall management, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the New York Athletic Club's 33-acre Travers Island campus. This position provides strategic leadership for all building systems, grounds infrastructure, preventative maintenance programs, construction projects, capital improvements, regulatory compliance, and maintenance personnel.

The Director will play a critical leadership role in the execution of the Club's Vision 2030 capital improvement program, coordinating contractors, consultants, and Club departments to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and with minimal disruption to members and operations.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader with exceptional organizational skills, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to balance daily operational demands with long-term capital planning.

Essential Responsibilities

Facilities Operations
  • Direct all maintenance operations throughout the Travers Island campus, including:
    • Clubhouse and Main House
    • Athletic facilities
    • Tennis House
    • Field House
    • Yacht Club
    • Swimming pool complex
    • Maintenance buildings
    • Mechanical spaces
    • Parking areas
    • Roadways and site infrastructure
    • Utilities and grounds support systems
  • Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs for all building systems and equipment.
  • Ensure reliable operation of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life safety, irrigation, pool systems, generators, elevators, refrigeration, and building automation systems.
  • Establish maintenance standards consistent with the expectations of a premier private club.


Construction & Capital Projects

Serve as the Club's on-site representative for all capital improvement projects.

Responsibilities include:
  • Managing construction schedules
  • Coordinating architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors
  • Reviewing project progress and quality
  • Monitoring budgets and change orders
  • Coordinating inspections and permits
  • Maintaining construction safety standards
  • Minimizing operational impacts on members and staff
  • Providing regular project updates to Club leadership

Participate in planning and implementation of future campus improvements as part of the Club's long-term capital strategy.

Staff Leadership

Provide leadership and supervision for the Maintenance Department, including:
  • Hiring and onboarding
  • Scheduling and workforce planning
  • Training and development
  • Performance management
  • Safety training
  • Employee coaching
  • Establishing productivity expectations
  • Building a culture focused on accountability, professionalism, and exceptional service

Coordinate maintenance staffing to support seasonal operations and special events.

Budget & Asset Management
  • Develop annual operating budgets for the Maintenance Department.
  • Assist in preparation of capital budgets and long-range replacement schedules.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Manage inventories of maintenance supplies, tools, equipment, and replacement parts.
  • Negotiate and administer vendor contracts and service agreements.


Regulatory Compliance & Safety

Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, county, and local regulations, including:
  • OSHA
  • Department of Health
  • Building Codes
  • Fire Code
  • Environmental regulations
  • Pool safety requirements
  • Waterfront and marina regulations
  • Workplace safety standards

Maintain all required maintenance records, inspection reports, permits, and compliance documentation.

Lead emergency preparedness planning and coordinate facility response during weather events, utility outages, and other emergencies.

Work collaboratively with all Club departments to maintain exceptional member experiences.

Coordinate maintenance activities to minimize disruptions during:

Work Schedule

This position requires flexibility to meet operational needs, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations. Availability during major Club events, summer operations, and severe weather incidents is expected.
