Position Summary

The Thermofluids Engineer is part of the Global Mechanical Systems Capability function. The Thermofluids Engineer will employ the Fluids sub-skills and the Thermo-mechanical sub-skills for definition, analysis, validation and verification activities. These will be applied to integrated power systems, sub-systems and component level evaluation and development in support of the AE engine programs within the Defense business.

The opportunities include capability acquisition, new product introduction and crucial in-service product support. The Thermofluids Engineer will participate within a Project Deployed IPT while engaged with the central engineering capability teams. The Engineering team member with this critical skillset within Rolls-Royce will operate in accordance with applicable Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) policies and processes.

What you will be doing
  • Define requirements for thermo-fluid systems and thermo-mechanical analysis, ensuring accurate and complete flow-down and capture of higher-level requirements pertaining to each engineering problem. This includes system, sub-system and component thermofluid, temperature and thermo-mechanical modelling requirements.
  • Integrate thermo-fluid systems through interaction with all adjacent areas across the organization so that thermofluid systems are optimized in ways that support optimum deployment of other, complimentary systems and components. These efforts will be effectively employed alongside the Project Engineer, Validation and Verification Engineer, and program design and functional chiefs.
  • Perform technical analysis of thermo-fluid system functionality, and temperature and thermo-mechanical analysis at whole-engine, sub-system and component level, using appropriate methods and tools and to a level of fidelity commensurate with each stage of the product lifecycle.
  • Perform appropriate verification and validation activity to ensure that requirements have been correctly written and that all Thermofluid related aspects of the powerplant (including thermofluid systems and temperature and thermo-mechanical modelling) meet expectations. This will include the specification of appropriate test and measurement activity, the calibration of models against measured data, and the quantification of uncertainty.
  • Manage the technical approval of all thermofluid systems and temperature and thermo-mechanical modelling through to certification and / or qualification, including process compliance checking, model auditing and documentation approval and retention. This technical oversite will be managed within the structured audit and technical review gated processes.
  • Support the product in-service as required. This may include but is not limited to on-going technical analysis, root-cause-analysis and resolution, and in-service modifications.

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM/Engineering with 1+ years' experience in thermodynamics, gas dynamics, fluid mechanics and/or engine design OR;
  • A Master's degree in STEM/Engineering; OR
