Shape the future of data center cooling! Are you passionate about solving complex thermal challenges and developing cutting-edge cooling technologies? Join our team as a Thermal Systems Engineer and play a key role in designing innovative thermal solutions that power the next generation of data centers.

As a Thermal Systems Engineer at Johnson Controls, you'll bridge the gap between advanced research and real-world products, transforming analytical insights into market-ready thermal systems. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams, contribute to new product development, and help deliver high-performance cooling solutions that support some of the world's most demanding computing environments. This position is based onsite at our Advanced Development & Engineering Innovation Center in New Freedom, PA. Candidates must be commuting distance to the office, or able to relocate. Various relocation packages are available.

How you will do it

  • Design and develop thermal solutions for data center cooling applications, including heat exchangers, cold plates, manifolds, and fluid distribution systems.
  • Perform thermal modeling, engineering analysis, and calculations to generate actionable design recommendations.
  • Translate research findings, test data, and engineering studies into product specifications and technical requirements.
  • Develop and execute validation test plans, analyze performance results, and correlate testing with analytical models.
  • Create technical documentation, specifications, and release packages that support manufacturing and production.
  • Support prototype builds, troubleshooting efforts, and design improvements to drive products toward production readiness.
  • Collaborate with mechanical design, manufacturing, and research teams to deliver innovative thermal solutions.


What you will need

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in thermal systems, HVAC product development, or related product design engineering.
  • Heat transfer principles (conduction, convection, and two-phase applications)
  • Thermodynamics and thermal cycle analysis
  • Fluid mechanics and hydraulic system design
  • Thermal component sizing and selection
  • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with engineering calculation and documentation tools such as MathCAD, EES, or similar platforms.


Preferred
  • CFD modeling using ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+, OpenFOAM, or similar software
  • FEA analysis using ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus, or equivalent tools
  • MATLAB/Simulink modeling
  • Python scripting, automation, and data analysis
  • Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC)
  • Cooling Distribution Units (CDUs)
  • Rear-Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx)
  • Refrigeration systems and refrigerant applications
  • Controls fundamentals, including feedback systems and PID tuning
  • Electrical system fundamentals, motor sizing, VFDs, and power distribution
  • Product development from concept through production launch
  • Hands-on prototype development and testing


HIRING SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - $100,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
