We are looking for you to join our team as a Thermal Engineering Manager 2 based out of Linthicum, MD.

What You’ll Get to Do:

This position is for a Functional Manager of thermal, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer analysts, supporting the Mission Systems Sector, in the Mechanical Analysis Section of the Mechanical Technology and Design Services department (at Baltimore, MD, located near BWI).  The manager will be responsible for both functional management and technical supervision of a Thermal Design and Analysis group.  The manager also ensures that the people, processes, and tools are in place to maintain program cost and schedule performance, while meeting program customer thermal and fluids design requirements.

This is a dual role manager position, involving technical responsibilities as well.  These include oversight of the thermal design of sensor systems in varying environments, including airborne, space, maritime and land based.  Technical areas of proficiency include leading a thermal analysis team, knowledge of thermal management systems, heat transfer and fluid dynamics.  The manager will also be responsible for attending internal technical reviews and customer reviews, analysis/test report approval, and thermal trade studies.

The manager is also responsible for staffing plans, staff performance evaluation, goal planning, process improvement, roadmap development, and hiring to manage analysis demand and skill attrition.  The manager will be able to lead through positive changes, as a champion for improvement and innovation.  Employee engagement and development will be maintained through a combination of training, employee career coaching, mentoring, identification of stretch assignments, and engagement action planning.  The manager will be able to meet performance goals with consideration for work/life balance of the staff.  The candidate should have strong communications skills, and an ability to build and maintain relationships with direct staff, customers, and cross organization partners.

This position is contingent upon the ability to obtain an active U.S Government Secret Clearance or the successful transfer of an active US. Government Secret Clearance prior to start.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with 8 years of experience, master’s degree with 6 years of experience, Ph.D. with 4 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • U.S Citizenship is required.

  • The ability to obtain/maintain a US Government Secret clearance.

  • A current/active clearance is not required to be considered for the position, but a final clearance is required to start

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in electronics cooling, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience performing design-by-analysis using finite volume or finite difference software packages for thermal or fluid applications

  • Experience serving as a program Thermal Lead on one or more development programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active US Government Secret clearance.

  • Expertise with Electronics Thermal Management and Heat Transfer principles

  • Strong leadership qualities, including excellent verbal and written communication, cross organization collaboration, team engagement, and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated success leading high performing teams (integrated product team lead, agile, or functional management)

  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with concentration in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with one or more of the following software packages: ANSYS Icepak, ANSYS Thermal Desktop, ANSYS Fluent

  • Experience leading process improvement, or introduction of new tools projects

  • Experience leading IRAD projects, proposals or Thermal TRL advancements.

  • Experience leading a thermal laboratory within budget constraints

  • Prior experience leading the thermal design of systems, CCAs and microelectronics level thermal designs

  • Demonstrated application of advanced convective thermal management and design of single phase and two-phase thermal design for high heat flux/high power density applications using analytical, high fidelity, or experimental methods

Primary Level Salary Range: $153,800.00 - $230,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
