TERMINAL OPERATIONS SUPERINTENDENT 

Little River or Nanaimo 

 

The Role 

Reporting to the Director, Terminal Operations, you provide leadership and oversight in the following key areas:  

  

Operational Leadership and Strategic Direction 

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and support to Regional Managers, Terminal Managers, and terminal teams to ensure consistent execution of operational standards 
  • Assist the Director, Terminal Operations in setting strategic direction, developing operational plans, and aligning terminal activities with organizational goals 
  • Plan, develop, and implement strategies to meet performance targets, budget expectations, service requirements, and operational deadlines 
  • Support the development of multi-year business plans, key performance indicators, terminal master plans, and operational strategies 

 

Safety, Security, Environmental, and SMS Oversight 

  • Oversee and support the effective implementation of the Safety Management System within terminal operations 
  • Monitor injury trends, assess root causes, and develop data-informed strategies to reduce risk and improve safety performance 
  • Participate in safety, security, and environmental consultations, ensuring operational concerns are addressed and regulatory requirements are met 
  • Promote a proactive safety culture by supporting hazard reporting, corrective actions, preventative measures, and continuous improvement 

 

Emergency Response, Business Continuity, and Asset Utilization 

  • In collaboration with the Operations and Security Centre, support and lead terminal response during emergencies to safeguard people, assets, operations, and the environment 
  • Oversee emergency preparedness activities and ensure terminal teams are trained and prepared to respond effectively 
  • Identify opportunities to improve utilization of land-based assets, including staffing, facilities, equipment, and terminal infrastructure 
  • Support capital projects and terminal master planning by providing operational input and ensuring future needs are considered 

 

Cross-Functional Collaboration, Staffing, and Customer Experience 

  • Liaise with corporate departments and functional teams to align operational goals, staffing strategies, performance expectations, and service delivery requirements 
  • Work with People Experience, Recruitment, and Scheduling Services to support strategic staffing practices and ensure operational demands are met 
  • Support hiring, employee development, performance planning, coaching, and accountability for management-level staff as required 
  • Model and promote excellence in customer service, support resolution of escalated customer concerns, and identify opportunities to improve the customer experience 

 

What you bring to the team 

Education/Academic Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Safety Management, Environmental Science, Logistics, or a related field 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered 

 

Work Experience Requirements 

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in terminal operations, transportation, safety management, environmental compliance, or a related field, including leadership or supervisory experience 

 

Competency Requirements 

  • Strong knowledge of terminal operations, Safety Management Systems, Dangerous Goods requirements, emergency response, regulatory compliance, and safety, security, and environmental standards 
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, operational performance management, staffing support, policy administration, audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives 
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, communication, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, and stakeholder management skills in a complex, fast-paced operational environment 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relevant safety, operational, or reporting systems 
  • Ability to balance strategic priorities with day-to-day operational needs while assessing safety trends, performance data, risk indicators, and operational improvement opportunities 
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to work effectively across departments, regulatory partners, and terminal teams, while supporting consistent, high-quality customer service delivery 
  • Proactive approach to risk management, compliance, accountability, coaching, and continuous improvement

Additional information 

The target salary range: $125,400-$156,800 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity.
