Mission for this Position

Reporting to the General Manager Operations, the Technical Services Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for Baffinland Iron Mines' Technical Services function. This role is accountable for leading mine technical services, geotechnical oversight, survey, geology, grade control, planning support, reporting, and continuous improvement activities to ensure safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective Mine operations. The incumbent leads and develops a multidisciplinary team of mining engineers, technicians, surveyors, geologists, and other technical professionals while ensuring alignment with safety, environmental, production, quality, regulatory, and budget objectives.

Main Accountabilities

  • Provide visible safety leadership and actively promote a strong safety culture across Technical Services. Ensure risk assessments, field-level hazard assessments, management of change, incident reporting and investigations, and procedure reviews are completed effectively and in accordance with company standards.
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of geotechnical inspection and monitoring programs, including water management infrastructure, to confirm infrastructure integrity, regulatory compliance, and safe operating conditions. Ensure adherence to the waste rock management plan and applicable environmental requirements.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing technical team through clear expectations, performance feedback, technical mentorship, workforce planning, and succession development. Build capability within the department to support current operational needs and future business requirements.
  • Develop and execute technical services strategies, operating plans, and improvement initiatives that support accident prevention, environmental performance, mine production, ore quality, cost control, capital planning, and enterprise risk management.
  • Manage departmental resources, budgets, systems, and processes to achieve annual objectives. Oversee Technical Services contracts, consultants, and service providers to ensure deliverables, performance, costs, and compliance obligations are met.
  • Establish and maintain effective operational reporting processes, including daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, and external regulatory reporting. Ensure reports are accurate, timely, actionable, and aligned with operational and business requirements.
    Ensure compliance with the quality management system and provide technical oversight of grade control and ore quality processes so that material delivered to customers meets product specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Health and Safety, Environment, Training, Human Resources, Operations, Planning and Maintenance, Port and Logistics, Continuous Improvement and Reliability, Cost Control, and Finance to ensure the business plan is safe, profitable, integrated, and deliverable. Act as a leader in interdepartmental planning, communication, and issue resolution.

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mining engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional registration, or eligibility for registration, in Nunavut or another Canadian jurisdiction is required.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience in open pit mining, mine planning, mine operations, geology, geotechnical, or technical services roles, including supervisory or leadership accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience using data analysis, process optimization, grade control, mine planning, and quality management practices to improve operational performance.
  • Experience in iron ore mining, remote northern operations, or complex logistics environments is considered an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear direction, recommendations, and business decisions for operational leaders, technical teams, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to resolve conflicts, address sensitive issues, and support constructive working relationships in a complex operational environment.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders, build alignment, and adapt communication style to a wide range of audiences while maintaining professionalism and credibility.
