Full Job Description
The opportunity

We are seeking a Technical / Methodology Lead to guide the analytical quality of AlphaGov's consulting engagements.

You will develop research approaches, oversee analytical work, interpret findings, and help our internal team build repeatable capabilities. You will also identify where specialized expertise is needed and direct the work of external experts.

We do not expect one person to be an expert in every service area. We do expect sound methodological judgment, deep expertise in relevant disciplines, and the ability to recognize when additional expertise is necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Translate client questions and solicitation requirements into defensible research and analytical plans.
  • Define data sources, sampling approaches, comparison groups, assumptions, and analytical methods.
  • Guide internal analysts through data collection, preparation, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Establish standards for source documentation, reproducibility, limitations, and evidence supporting conclusions.
  • Review models, calculations, survey instruments, interview protocols, and analytical outputs.
  • Identify methodological risks, data gaps, and conclusions that exceed the available evidence.
  • Select and coordinate specialized experts for clearly defined technical assignments.
  • Translate findings into practical recommendations for agency leaders.
  • Support client presentations, technical discussions, and stakeholder workshops.
  • Contribute technical approaches, staffing assumptions, and effort estimates to proposals.
  • Build reusable methodologies, analytical templates, and training materials.
  • Work with the independent QA lead to resolve findings before delivery.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more relevant fields: labor economics, workforce analytics, public policy research, compensation analysis, economic development, or program evaluation.
  • Experience designing and delivering applied research or analytical consulting engagements.
  • Strong quantitative skills and the ability to evaluate data quality, assumptions, and methodological limitations.
  • Experience using public datasets and documenting analytical work so another qualified reviewer can reproduce it.
  • Ability to connect analytical findings to operational or policy decisions.
  • Experience supervising analysts or coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Strong technical writing and the ability to explain complex findings to nontechnical audiences.
  • Relevant education or equivalent professional experience supported by completed work.
Preferred qualifications
  • Graduate education in economics, statistics, public policy, public administration, or a related discipline.
  • Experience serving government agencies or other public-sector clients.
  • Familiarity with workforce and economic data sources such as BLS, Census, and state labor market information.
  • Proficiency in relevant analytical tools, such as R, Python, SQL, or advanced Excel.
  • Experience with mixed-method research, survey design, compensation benchmarking, or evaluation design.
  • Experience developing reusable analytical methods and mentoring delivery teams.

Benefits
What success looks like
  • Each engagement uses methods appropriate to the client's question and available evidence.
  • Findings are traceable, reproducible, and clearly qualified.
  • Recommendations are useful to decision-makers.
  • Specialists contribute where their expertise adds value.
  • Internal analysts become increasingly capable of performing rigorous work independently.
