What You Will Do

In this role as a technical editor, you will be embedded with a specific Laboratory organization, where you will collaborate with talented team members and technical experts to ensure clear, compliant documentation that governs operations at some of the Laboratory's facilities.

This position specifically is with a team of editors who support the Weapons Production directorate through procedure writing and preparation. As a member of the team, working to ensure safe and compliant procedures, you will become a trusted participant in LANL's production mission.

You will perform mechanical and substantive edits to ensure quality across all documentation and to ensure technical accuracy while maintaining readability. You will also provide communications counsel and dedicated services to leaders, managers, and staff.

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and will have initiative and the ability to quickly adapt to an intense and highly technical environment. This job requires the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Technical Knowledge
To be successful, you will have a thorough knowledge of English grammar and punctuation, and extensive experience in technical editing and writing, with the ability to translate complex concepts and material into clear, concise writing.

You are expected to have advanced proficiency using Microsoft Word, with a solid understanding of Word styles and templates. You will have intermediate to advanced skills in Adobe Acrobat and other Microsoft 365 applications (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel). You will also have experience implementing a functional file structure and organization system.

You will have demonstrated expertise in leading process improvement efforts for customers (e.g., developing templates, training template users, identifying process efficiencies).

Communication, Work Management and Customer Service
You will have excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and customer-service skills, including demonstrated experience working with technical subject matter experts in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. You must have the ability to remain courteous and professional under pressure; communicate effectively with team members, technical personnel, students, and managers; resolve issues; clarify priorities; meet deliverables; and improve processes based on customer and manager feedback.

Tools and Systems
You will have experience with document control/management systems.

Candidates should have a baseline understanding of generative AI tools, prompt engineering, evaluating AI-generated content for accuracy and quality, and applying AI responsibly within organizational policies.

Education/Experience: This position requires a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a physical, life, or social science and a minimum of five years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
Industry Knowledge: Experience working in a national laboratory or other large government organization. Experience with procedures and other documents related to facility operations.
Other: The ability to obtain a Q clearance is required; an active Q clearance is preferred.

Work Schedule: This position is located in Los Alamos, NM-employees must live within a 2-hour drive of the Laboratory and perform onsite work.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in . Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
