Position SummaryThe Tax Manager is responsible for managing the tax planning, reporting and compliance functions, including both preparation and review of income tax returns and their underlying calculations, tax accounting analysis and reporting, tax research and planning, and implementing tax projects and strategies.
Role and Responsibilities- Manage the third party preparation of all tax filings and reporting in compliance with all required regulations.
- Evaluate the tax implications of company activities and develop strategies to minimize tax obligations.
- Advise on future changes to tax regulations and possible impact to the organization.
- Act as a liaison and relationship manager to initiate and coordinate tax accounting duties with internal advisors and third parties.
- Monitor and collaborate with outsourced tax preparation work and interact with auditors on tax-related matters.
- Review tax accounting policies and procedures to ensure internal controls are maintained, accounting principles are followed, and financial data is valid and reliable. Provide guidance on the application of tax accounting principles and other applicable regulations.
- Manage relationships with third party tax preparers.
- Work with accounting department to ensure timely payment of real estate taxes.
- Participate in special projects and prepare ad-hoc reports as required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements- Strong background in federal and state income tax compliance, with an emphasis in partnership ownership structures. Prior 1065 tax preparation experience required.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills required, including the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent time management skills, drive to take initiative, use of good judgment, strong sense of urgency and attention to detail in order to carry multiple projects through to completion.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight time constraints, as well as the ability to deal with frequent interruptions, unresolved situations, frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal professionally with vendors, varying levels of management, and co-workers through e-mail, on the phone and in person.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Ability to keep sensitive information highly confidential.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work and ask for further clarification when necessary.
Required Education and Experience- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, with strong knowledge of tax and accrual basis accounting and financial reporting.
- 4 - 6 years of direct tax experience in public accounting or corporate environment working with federal and multi-state taxation.
- Prior hands-on experience with partnership tax return preparation.
Preferred Education and Experience- CPA license strongly preferred.
- Public accounting experience a plus.
- 2 - 4 years of real estate experience strongly preferred.
