Job Summary

The Tax Manager will support, monitor, help to develop and continually refine the federal income tax strategy for Harley-Davidson, Inc. and subsidiaries to minimize the Company's tax risks and liabilities and maximize our tax opportunities and refunds. This work will involve the coordination and oversight of the implementation, documentation, maintenance and continual improvement of the underlying US income tax accounting and compliance processes to ensure that all US income tax filings and reporting and recordkeeping obligations are timely met.

The Federal Tax Manager will also be responsible for establishing, monitoring, and communicating internal tax policies and procedures to ensure appropriate documentation and internal controls are in place and effective as well as serve as the primary contact for both financial and US income tax auditors. This role will lead, support and educate various tax and non-tax team members during the completion of the tax processes and deliverables noted above. In addition, this role will be the primary tax contact for US business and functional personnel to support US tax matters that may not have a designated H-D resource as well as various business changes that may require further US income tax analysis, planning and consideration.

Job Responsibilities

  • TAX ACCOUNTING:
    • Coordination of the preparation and review of the US federal and state income tax provision computations with a focus on completeness, technical and computational accuracy and efficiency. Ensure proper consolidation and reporting of global income tax expense, deferred tax items, tax payable balances, tax reserves and valuation allowances, effectively managing the control process that combines the separate functional items into the final deliverables as well as the consolidation of HDFS and HDMC information. Coordination of timely provision to return computations and adjustments resulting from tax audits and related journal entries which include an evaluation of and action plans for the improvement of processes that produced material differences as well as the technical evaluation of the required tax accounting entries to be made.
  • TAX COMPLIANCE:
    • Coordination of the preparation and review of the US federal income tax compliance process with a focus on completeness, technical and computational accuracy and efficiency. Ensure that all US income tax filing deadlines and documentation requirements are met which would include the coordination of estimated and extension payments and the separate allocations between HDFS and HDMC. Monitor US GAAP, US income tax law and business changes which would impact US income tax filing requirements, methods, positions, risk, payments or liability. Lead and develop tax team members through task assignment and mentoring during the compliance processes. Seek to educate non-tax and non-finance personnel on tax matters related to their function and support them in finding efficient solutions to managing their compliance requirements.
  • TAX AUDITS:
    • Ensure the management of Federal income tax audits to include review and coordination of data collection, analysis and communication between tax personnel and tax authorities or external consultants for both HDFS and HDMC. Support non-income tax and foreign income tax audits as needed with respect to US entity information needs.
  • TAX PLANNING:
    • Support US business and functional personnel by coordinating US income tax analysis, planning and considerations resulting from ongoing questions and changes in the business or tax laws. Manage outsourced tax projects from scoping and fee request through provider selection and project delivery with focus on spend, efficiency, business resources, tax opportunities/risks, documentation and audit defense.

Experience Requirements

This position typically requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:
  • Income tax experience with a Public Accounting firm and/or global company that includes exposure to a variety of tax issues and related compliance and audit experience
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and process management skills and personal initiative;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, the ability to explain tax concepts to non-tax personnel and tailor communication to recipients with different levels of knowledge;
  • Experience and comfort working in a fast paced environment, both independently and as part of a larger team;
  • Developed focus on time management and meeting deadlines with demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize work on several ongoing projects at once;
  • Desire and willingness to learn new areas of tax, keep abreast of changes in tax law and genuine interest in understanding the business operations and transaction flows;
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to apply general financial and tax concepts to new factual situations or changes in the business and the ability to identify potential issues or concerns and propose recommended actions or solutions;
  • Experience with Tax Compliance Software (i.e. OneSource, ProSystems, Corptax or other major provider), Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with extracting information from financial systems (i.e. Hyperion, JD Edwards, SAP and/or BPC or other major provider).

Preferred
  • CPA designation or an advanced degree in Tax or Law is preferred.
  • Experience with Corptax and familiarity with extracting information from SAP and BPC.


The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
