Project Overview:

Bechtel is partnering with NextDecade to support their vision to provide the world access to lower carbon intensive energy with their Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) project in Brownsville, Texas. RGLNG is a natural gas liquefaction and export terminal situated on a 984-acre site on the banks of the Brownsville ship channel. The first phase of the RGLNG project consists of three liquefaction trains, two storage tanks and one marine berth. At full capacity, the five-train facility will have a production capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Brownsville, Texas is a city known for its diverse history, tradition, and rich culture. Job Summary:

A major part of the welding work on this project consists of the erection of the cylindrical LNG Tanks. Ensure Safe work practices and conditions at worksite. Ensure all tank components that require welding comply with contract and design requirements. Ensuring all works are performed according to approved Specifications, Procedures and Plans. Ensure that the Construction team adhere to all necessary Codes and Methods Statements. Liaise with the customer and ensure that customer nominated inspection points are adhered to, as required by the Inspection & Test Plan. Assist with the coordination and compilation of the Manufactures Data Report. General Inspection of all welded steel included in the tank scope. #LI-BH1

Major Responsibilities:

The Field Welding Engineer is responsible for the supporting the Lead Field Welding Engineer in implementing and maintaining the site tank welding program. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Provide technical assistance to field superintendents/ weld technicians and craft.
  • Help oversee and maintain Project Field Welding program.
  • Provide specialized welding engineering support to ensure construction meets all code and site requirements.
  • Be engaged with the tank construction team and support the daily construction activities planned.
  • Implementation of the project ES&H program and quality control program.
  • Support welder testing on-site and help ensure high quality welders are being tested.
  • Working knowledge of our corporate welding procedures and standards.
  • Help coordinate and support the project NDE program.
  • Support the crafts involved with tank construction in meeting quality requirements in order to maintain cost and schedule.
  • Verification of materials, workmanship, and specification/code requirements. Interface with the tank welding manager for direction of work task assigned.
  • Visual inspection of tank welding.
  • Perform oversight of inspections and documentation of all subcontractor NDE work in progress on a continuing basis.
  • Review the results of subcontracted NDE work and judge the acceptability of welds to tank welding codes and procedures.
  • Help resolve issues with engineering and/or fabrication.
  • Help oversee field preheat operations.
  • Have a working knowledge of several types of computer software and be comfortable with learning new software tools.
  • Maintain digital welding and NDE records.
  • WITS and TEAMWorks database experience in desirable.
  • Must be knowledgeable in ASME, API, AWS, and other applicable industry standards. Knowledge and understanding of Bechtel's SWPP 4MP-T81-03701 Welding Program, 03702 Welder Training & Instructor Qualification, 03703 Positive Material Identification, and 03705 Welding & NDE Documentation is desirable.
  • Help maintain welder qualifications and welder stamps.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bechtel Certifications & Designations/Basic Safety Awareness preferred.
  • Basic General ES&H Skills Safety Compliance.
  • Tank Construction/Welding 4 years' experience preferred.
  • Tank Construction/Welding. Construction Quality Audits Acceptable.
  • Basic Construction Environmental Safety & Health.
  • Basic Office Automation Skills.
  • Visual Inspection of Welds.
  • Certifiable to ASNT Level II acceptable.
  • Intermediate technical/practical welding knowledge.
  • SMAW/FCAW/SAW skill.
  • Interrmediate working knowledge of equipment and consumables.


Additional Information

Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must be able to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e., harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.). Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as required that may include but not limited to nightshift or split shift.
