Full Job Description
Overview

Joby's Advanced Development group is looking for a Systems Integration and Test Engineer to take commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) avionics and electronic line-replaceable units (LRUs) from datasheet to a flight-ready, configuration-controlled installation on a new autonomous aircraft. You'll own everything in between. That means deciding whether a chosen unit will actually work in our operating environment, planning how it gets integrated, and testing it at the component and system level. It also means defining the configuration every following aircraft is built to.This is a hands-on role. Expect about half your time at the bench, the Iron Bird, or the aircraft. The other half goes to writing the plans, procedures, and configuration records that make that work repeatable. The environment is fast and thrives on lean process and a cohesive team atmosphere.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate selected COTS LRUs (sensors, radios, power conversion, data acquisition) against system requirements and the aircraft's operating environment. Identify gaps in environmental, EMI, power quality, and interface performance. Recommend a mitigation, additional testing, or an alternative unit
  • Develop an integration plan for each LRU. It should cover interface definition, power and data connectivity, mounting and thermal needs, test sequence, and entry and exit criteria from bench to Iron Bird to aircraft
  • Write and execute component-level test procedures: receiving inspection, functional, acceptance, and environmental screening. Produce clear pass/fail evidence
  • Bring up LRUs on the bench and in the Iron Bird/HIL environment. Debug power, interface, timing, and communication faults across hardware, firmware, and software boundaries
  • Define and maintain LRU configuration so the as-built aircraft matches the as-designed one. This covers part numbers, hardware and firmware revisions, software loads, configuration files, settings, and pinouts
  • Author ICDs for LRU electrical and data interfaces. Work with EWIS engineers to turn pinouts and connector definitions into harness requirements, and with Software to integrate each LRU into Superpilot, Joby's internally developed autonomy software stack
  • Write integration and test procedures that technicians can execute on recurring builds, and support technicians through first installs
  • Work directly with vendors on documentation gaps, firmware issues, and failure investigations
  • Support test readiness and flight clearance with Flight Software, GNC, Flight Test, and Airworthiness
Required
  • B.S. in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering or a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience, or 7+ years of equivalent hands-on experience with demonstrated engineering responsibility
  • Hands-on experience integrating and testing electronic hardware in aircraft, UAS, spacecraft, automotive, or similar systems
  • Working knowledge of common interfaces (CAN, RS-232/422/485, ARINC 429, Ethernet, discrete I/O) and 28VDC power distribution
  • Fluency with oscilloscopes, DMMs, programmable supplies, protocol analyzers, and bus monitors
  • Experience writing test procedures and documenting results with traceability to requirements
  • Ability to read and produce schematics, wiring diagrams, and pinout definitions
  • Scripting in Python or similar for test automation, data capture, or unit configuration
  • Ability to work independently with limited documentation and support

This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. a7 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.

Desired
  • Environmental and EMI qualification experience (DO-160, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461), including judging when vendor data is sufficient and when it isn't
  • Experience with low-pressure, low-temperature, or high-altitude environments, such as arcing and corona, reduced convective cooling, and cold soak
  • Iron Bird, HIL, or SIL bring-up and operation
  • Configuration management in a PLM system (Enovia or similar), first article inspection, and ATP authorship
  • Integration of GNSS, air data, IMU, datalink, or flight control computer hardware
  • Familiarity with ARP4754A and DO-254 concepts as applied to COTS hardware
  • Prior technician background (A&P, military avionics, electronics technician)

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $115,200 - $155,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
