Position DescriptionThe Sustaining Engineer reports to an Engineering Supervisor in the Data Center vertical. She/he works within the Engineering Department to support daily operations and continuous design improvement of Data Center Air Handling Unit cooling products.
Key Responsibilities- Lead Post-Launch Engineering Activities: Coordinate and execute engineering activities for design updates and manufacturability improvements in production.
- Evaluate & Estimate VA/VE Changes: Conduct preliminary design feasibility studies, technical reviews, and engineering evaluations to support VA/VE cost reductions and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) improvements.
- Implement Engineering Change: Own the end-to-end execution of approved VA/VE design updates, including ECR/ECO approval oversight, drawing and BOM release, and initial production trials.
- Drive Factory Floor Troubleshooting & 8D Root Cause Analysis: Partner directly with operations and quality teams to rapidly troubleshoot daily manufacturing roadblocks, utilizing structured 8D methodology to identify root causes, implement immediate containment actions, and design permanent corrective/preventative engineering solutions.
- Collaborate on CAD & DFM Updates: Partner closely with designers and drafting teams to develop and refine detailed 3D CAD models and drawings, ensuring updates are optimized for assembly and fabrication.
- Facilitate Multi-Site & Supplier Collaboration: Serve as the technical bridge interfacing between operations, manufacturing engineering, purchasing, and suppliers to resolve day-to-day operations and design-related issues.
- Travel: Travel domestically or internationally up to 15% (primarily to manufacturing facilities, supplier sites, or customer installations for troubleshooting and validation).
Required Education & Qualifications- A degree in engineering or related technical discipline with 1-3+ years engineering experience, or a master's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline
- An understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA)
- A continuous improvement (CI) mindset and familiarity with Lean Manufacturing
- Strong analysis, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work cross functionally
- Prior experience with heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, or other HVAC industry experience, including cosmetic or structural sheet metal design
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD systems
- Familiarity with Engineering Change Request and Change Order processes
