The Sustainability Engineer will play a key role in researching, evaluating, and introducing new materials and technologies that reduce environmental impact while maintaining product performance and commercial viability.
This position will collaborate closely with Materials Engineering, Product Development, Manufacturing, Operations, Sales, Marketing, and external suppliers to identify and implement sustainable alternatives across a diverse product portfolio. This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to influence corporate sustainability initiatives and help shape future product strategies.
Key Responsibilities - Research and evaluate sustainable materials, recycled content solutions, and biodegradable alternatives for product applications
- Lead testing and validation efforts from concept through commercialization
- Coordinate laboratory trials, production testing, and performance evaluations
- Support product development activities including specifications, drawings, and design documentation
- Conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) and analyze environmental impact data
- Partner with suppliers to evaluate emerging technologies and material innovations
- Develop cost analyses to assess financial impacts of alternative material adoption
- Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to communicate sustainability initiatives and value propositions
- Support product portfolio optimization, SKU rationalization, and cost-reduction initiatives
- Assist with regulatory compliance related to plastics recycling and sustainable materials

Desired Background - Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or a related technical field
- Experience in Materials Engineering, Polymer Science, Plastics, Packaging, or Product Development
- Knowledge of sustainable materials, recycled resins, biodegradable materials, or circular economy initiatives
- Understanding of plastics processing technologies such as injection molding and/or blow molding
- Experience supporting new product introductions within a manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement methodologies
- Strong analytical, project management, and communication skills
- Experience with life cycle assessments (LCA), sustainability programs, or environmental compliance is highly desirable
