Full Job Description

Starting Salary Range: $104,400.00 - $128,500.00

Position Summary:

Supervises the operation of BWL Plant Facilities to maintain a safe and productive environment. Responsible for supervision of operators in the Combustion turbine generator, boiler, turbine, generator, and auxiliary equipment systems. Knowledge of all systems is required. Must coordinate with other departments. Responsible for ensuring MIOSHA compliance including LOTO (among others). Creates and maintains a safe work environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors the operation of all plant equipment. Supervises gas plant operators.  

  • Schedules operators’ time and activities.

  • Supervise and oversee the Operations department skill improvement, training, and safety programs. Ensure that an adequate number of trained personnel are available to maintain continuous and safe operation, even under adverse conditions

  • Coordinates clearance and release requests of equipment with the operators.

  • Assists in monitoring/troubleshooting of equipment performance issues.

  • Communicates via telephone or handheld radio with operators, other department personnel, or personnel in other departments.

  • Coordinates between operations department and other departments to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the plant.

  • Provide operations training for the maintenance technicians by presenting instruction on equipment operating procedures.

  • Issues operating procedures, as required, and periodically reviews existing operating procedures and issues revisions, as deemed necessary, to ensure that they reflect correct and safe operating practices.

  • Consults with Maintenance Supervisor on issues of importance. 

  • Maintains complete and accurate records as required.

  • Assists operators on any job as required.

  • Performs work on organizational or departmental committees as requested by supervisor.

  • Supports the BWL electric production Work Management process.

  • Supports the BWL Asset Management Program

  • Serves as Incident Commander in emergency situations.

  • Follows and enforces BWL Employee Rules of Conduct as well as other BWL / Plant policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as necessitated or assigned by job responsibilities.

  • Leads the daily morning plan of the day meetings with various BWL support groups.

  • Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.

  • Demonstrates positive problem solving and communication skills when interacting with internal/external personnel.

  • Assists in budgetary responsibilities.

  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.

  • Reliable and predictable attendance.

  • Other duties assigned by management.

Job Specifications:

Required:

  • This position requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • This position requires a minimum of five years of power plant experience and two years of control room operator (or equivalent) experience is required.

  • A minimum of two years of previous leadership experience or enrollment in the emerging leader’s program is preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of power plant operations (Combustion turbines, boilers, PRV’S, steam turbines, air compressors, feed water heaters, cooling towers, chillers, pumps, chemical feeders, & demineralizer) and plant electrical systems, equivalent to hands-on experience in plant engineering, or successful completion of Gas Plant Chiller Operator classification.

  • Experience working with a work management system to identify work needs.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and SAP.

  • Must drive pickup truck or car as required.

  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with acceptable record.

  • Must respond to emergency conditions requiring ability to communicate via phone or radio.

  • Must be able to work various shifts if required.

Preferred:

  • Previous Station Shift Supervisor experience.

  • Previous power plant and leader/supervisory experience.

  • Related training, certification, and/or licenses. 


Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day.  The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead.  The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.            

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
