Supervisor, Electrical Engineering KNES

Reporting to: Chief Engineer KNES

Location: Wisconsin, New Berlin

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor of Electrical Engineering has the responsibility of directing and running all facets of the electrical engineering group including personnel and equipment. This senior electrical engineer will be able to direct the design of power and control systems, which encompasses electric motor controls using contactors or VFDs, utility circuits, safety circuits, and operator controls, as related to overhead cranes and hoists. Conduct electrical oversight of all projects to ensure proper application of customer specifications as well as NEC or other electrical code requirements, selection of components such as circuit breakers, transformers, motor starters, contactors, relays, PLC, HMI, and A.C. inverters, braking resistors, etc. This individual will oversee the electrical department in all phases of product or development engineering activities related to the creation of product designs, production drawings, schematics, panel layouts, wiring interconnects and conduit sizing / layouts, bills of materials and programming. The fundamental focus of the supervisor is to ensure a quality and accurate product is released to our Manufacturing department that complies with electrical Codes & Standards and is safe for all operators and technicians. The selected individual will lead Electrical Engineers in designing, testing, and startup of the controls system, interface with customers and other departments to resolve problems and ensure a project meets specification, is on time, and on budget.

All lead electrical engineers, electrical drafters, and electrical interns report to this individual.

This individual reports directly to the Chief Engineer.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for handling and properly delegating all developmental aspects of the largest, most complex material handling and crane projects, including all electrical design, development of new software systems, modifying existing systems, and developing testing programs for all facets of the project.

Oversee and check the calculation of wire sizes / overload protection for any model crane up to 800 volts D.C. and up to 10000 volts A.C. from schematics or other information provided by customer specifications by using appropriate electrical codes and appropriate Konecranes standards. Be able to review and verify electrical panel short circuit current ratings (SCCR) and arc flash analysis and circuit breaker

coordination studies. Review and verify the calculation of control panel heat loading and design in appropriate heat exchanger system.

Participate in resolving manufacturing problems (shop or field) by working with other engineers and service technicians, along with persons in other departments, to research and define problems, research, and prepare solutions by properly communicating with the necessary personnel.

Oversee designs and development of computer programs, specifically PLC code and HMI programs that serve to control / monitor all or specific crane processes.

Consult with the customer/operators to analyze and understand the customer specifications, all required crane functions, including those that need to be automated and those that need additional safety systems.

Oversee and delegate the preparation of single line diagrams, schematics, panel layouts and interconnect and conduit drawings by using specifications / information provided by customer.

Oversee sizing and proper section of purchased components/BOMs by reviewing Konecranes standards, vendor information and by utilizing personal knowledge of products. Oversee calculations for control panel heat loading and proper selection of appropriate heat exchanger system.

Provide technical supervision to other electrical engineers, drafters, and layout drafters on a daily basis for individual projects that they are jointly assigned to. Work with the project manager to establish work requirements, meet release schedules, and daily review of work activities.

Provide input to design improvements by providing information to the chief engineer that shows improved functions and/or cost reduction.

Modify/improve existing circuit designs due to field problems, material obsolescence, or other reasons as defined by managers and customers.

Oversee design and installation of electrical control panels / enclosures / junction boxes, connection/cable/conduit diagrams, and general arrangement drawings, etc. utilizing one's knowledge of product, applicable electrical codes and required clearances, as well as Konecranes Electrical Standards, and by working with mechanical engineering and manufacturing when necessary.

Be able to travel to sites to attend meetings or trouble shoot a control system if a major problem occurs.

Review customer specifications during the bidding phase (new projects) to determine concerns or risks associated with the customer requirements so they can be addressed in the bid documents. Assist Application Engineering with highly technical control applications.

Provides or designs training programs pertinent to job responsibilities of employees in the electrical engineering department.

Identify staffing needs and help to recruit, hire, and retain qualified individuals. Manages electrical department vacations / time off to meet project schedule requirements. Coordinate Project assignments / on-site Engineering support / workflow / resources through Electrical Engineering.

Approve electrical department expense reports. Approve all electrical drawing releases in EPDM. Conduct yearly performance reviews of all personnel in the electrical department.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have BSEE or BSEET

5 to 10 years of electrical engineering/drafting experience (AutoCAD), PLC and HMI programming experience, and experience in setting up variable frequency drives. Rockwell, Siemens PLC/HMI and Magnetek, Siemens VFD programming experience preferred.

Knowledgeable with using and applying the NEC electrical code.

Ability to lead and work with others to maximize their productivity.

Be able to travel domestically and internationally to nuclear and US government facilities.

Must be self-motivated and display leadership abilities plus have management training or experience overseeing daily tasks of groups up to 20 people.
