Description

Position Summary:

The AM Supervising Attorney is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and operational leadership of MCLA's statewide Remote Services Center during the morning shift. The position ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality legal services by coaching and supporting attorneys and support staff, monitoring service quality, coordinating daily operations, and collaborating with leadership on staffing, training, and program development. The successful candidate will also maintain an active legal practice by providing brief legal advice and assistance to self-represented litigants.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of attorneys and support staff delivering legal services through MCLA's statewide Remote Services Center, ensuring consistent, high-quality assistance to litigants across Maryland. Provides ongoing coaching, support, and formal and informal feedback to promote high-quality legal services and excellent customer service.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the other RSC Supervisors, the Deputy Director for Remote Services, and the broader supervisory team on hiring, onboarding, trainings, scheduling, quality assurance, data reporting, workflow management, and development of internal resources.
  • Respond to escalated litigant concerns and complaints, provide exceptional customer service, and work to resolve issues in a professional, compassionate, and timely manner.
  • Provide brief legal advice and information to self-represented litigants, including drafting pleadings and motions, preparing litigants for court, and assisting with court forms.
  • Assist litigants with a broad range of Maryland civil legal issues, including landlord-tenant matters, civil claims, expungement and shielding, consumer issues, return of property, domestic violence/peace orders, family law, and foreclosure.
  • Identify operational challenges and opportunities for improvement and contribute to the ongoing development of Remote Services Center practices, workflows, and resources.
  • Be able to support MCLA's other offices and service delivery models as needed.
  • Primary schedule is 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday. Position may occasionally require coverage outside of scheduled hours and availability for supervisory issues as needed.

Scope of Role

This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of MCLA's statewide Remote Services Center during the morning shift, providing supervision and operational leadership for attorneys and support staff serving litigants throughout Maryland. The position works collaboratively with the PM Supervising Attorney and other program leaders to maintain continuity of operations, coordinate staffing and workflow, and ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery. The role includes conducting regular call and chat monitoring, facilitating team check-ins, and performing performance evaluations to support staff development and maintain service standards. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the position provides direct legal services to litigants, balancing client service with coaching, quality assurance, and operational oversight in a high-volume legal services environment.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in Maryland, or admission in another jurisdiction with eligibility and willingness to obtain Maryland admission at the first available opportunity.
  • At least three years of litigation or relevant legal services experience, including demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively balance supervisory responsibilities with direct client service in a high-volume environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple urgent issues simultaneously while exercising sound judgment and maintaining professionalism.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff with different experience levels, communication styles, and support needs.
  • Flexible, collaborative, and solution-oriented team member who is open to change and comfortable helping implement new processes and ideas.
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal concepts in plain language and effectively assist litigants who may be confused, overwhelmed, or in crisis.
  • Ability to conduct efficient legal research and quickly become familiar with unfamiliar areas of law.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of MCLA's brief advice model and prior experience working in a legal brief-advice setting.
  • Fluency in Spanish or American Sign Language (ASL)

Physical and Environmental Demands:

This position requires occasional travel to other MCLA offices, courthouses, or meeting locations. The employee must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Essential physical functions may include:

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $96,000.00 - $110,000.00. In addition, MCLA provides employees with a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, paid vacation, sick leave, and personal leave, 14 annual paid holidays, and more.
