Job Description

The Superintendent of Inventory Control is responsible for the efficient and secure receipt, storage and distribution of the inventory of bus parts and supplies. This position also is responsible for the operation of the inventory control computer program utilization, the day-to-day supervision of the Hartford parts room and the Maintenance Support Assistants, and providing some direction, assistance, technical support and training to the other divisions.
Examples of Duties

  1. Responsible for establishing and enforcing rules and procedures to provide the security of the three parts rooms and mezzanine storage area, and the highest possible level of accuracy in record keeping functions.
  2. Supervises the day-to-day operation of the Hartford parts room and the Maintenance Support Assistants. This includes direct supervision of bargaining unit and staff employees. Some direction and assistance is provided for the New Haven and Stamford parts rooms as well.
  3. Through the management of the Maintenance Support Assistants is responsible for management of fixed asset inventory, outside contract maintenance of non-revenue vehicles, outside contract maintenance for two-way radios, outside management of the uniform contract and management of warranty recoveries.
  4. This position works closely with the Purchasing and Contract Officer to assure that adequate bus parts and supplies are available. This includes preparing timely submittals of requisitions for parts and supplies, planning the size and content of inventory to be carried for new types of equipment and rolling stock, special orders, campaigns, warranty programs, and seasonal needs. The position provides direction on the quality of parts and supplies required; determines lot sizing, and contents of prepackaged kits; makes inquiries regarding back order status, and requests order expediting when necessary.
  5. Assists the Director of Equipment and Maintenance in the development of inventory control policy and procedures, including performance goals and objectives. Provides technical assistance and training for all three divisions as warranted.
  6. The position is responsible for the operation of the inventory control computer program utilization.
  7. This employee coordinates and conducts the physical inventory in cooperation with the Internal Auditor. The position is also responsible to administer an on-going daily cycle counting program to maintain inventory accuracy.
  8. Maintains necessary records, conducts analysis, and makes changes or recommendations for change to inventory content, size and order points; storage methods; distribution methods; centralization of inventory storage; stock outs and stock turnover; record keeping procedures; etc. Prepares regular and special reports as warranted.
  9. Work cooperatively with all levels of personnel.
  10. Attends in-service training, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the Agency. Provides training for Agency personnel as required. Actively participates in staff meeting, trainings, etc.
  11. Has thorough working knowledge of Agency policies and procedures.
  12. Performs evaluation, review and goal setting for subordinates.
  13. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree with major course work in Business Administration, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Economics, or a closely related field is preferred. Specialized training in warehousing, purchasing, operations engineering, logistics, or computerized purchasing and inventory control is highly desirable. Experience with bus, truck or automotive parts is required.
  2. Five (5) years of professional full time experience in the management of an automotive or fleet parts inventory is required. At least two (2) years of this experience must have included significant responsibility as a supervisor or department head.
  3. Proficient in software programs (word processing, spreadsheet and database), Internet applications and utilization of all relevant office equipment. The ability to learn quickly internal software programs. Must be able to handle confidential information.
  4. The ability to prioritize projects and have excellent communication (especially verbal), interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy. Requires good knowledge of management and supervisory principals. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  5. Valid drivers' license and the ability to be insured by our insurance company throughout employment. Individual may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
