Selects the right equipment and techniques for treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system. Monitors, examines, and treats physiologic conditions safely under a physician's order and supervision.
Essential Functions of the Role- Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other team members informed.
- Ensures the sterility and integrity of disposable equipment packaging. Ensures correct setup and breakdown of all equipment.
- Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-help devices.
- Mixes and administers drugs and solutions for extracorporeal circulation. Follows industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
- Adjusts gas flow and mixtures. Administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit. This consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
- Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; evaluates and maintains records after surgery.
- Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
Key Success Factors- Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.
- Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.
- Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.
- Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific blood flow paths in the body, including pressures and gas exchange in adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
- Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products by extracorporeal circuits and devices.
- Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow orders, take directions, and deploy written perfusion protocols.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal help devices and providing patient care.
- Learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards for operating room procedures and departmental policies.
- Ability to work and join in a flexible way in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.
- Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.
QUALIFICATIONS- EDUCATION - Bachelor's

Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP)
Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO)
Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
