Your Opportunity

As a Structural Engineer your role is to work with general supervision and direction on multiple projects, and as a team member on larger projects under the guidance of the Senior Structural Engineer. You will perform and develop evaluations, analyses, calculations, design drawings, recommendations, and specifications for engineered systems for projects in accordance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices for a variety of both new construction and rehabilitation designs of hydraulic, environmental, industrial and general structures.

The Structural Engineer will be engaged in Quality Control (QC) and be actively involved in meeting schedules and resolving problems to successfully deliver projects. Typical design projects may include spillways, dams, pumping stations, tanks, culverts, pipe systems, water & wastewater treatment facilities, and a variety of other water related structures.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preliminary and detailed structural analysis and design for Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, Reservoirs, other Hydraulic Containment Facilities, Industrial Structures, and Administrative Buildings
  • Perform a variety of tasks related to structural engineering in support of dams, flood protection, power, water resources, and water infrastructure projects.
  • Design, analyze, and specify primarily reinforced concrete, masonry and structural steel systems and buildings
  • Work on projects of varying complexity and size including oversight and ownership of design, analysis, and documentation, client interaction, and staff coordination
  • Support an engineering team responsible for evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering all structural engineered systems or products for a project
  • Support an engineering team responsible for the preparation and revisions to documentation in various structural phases including conceptual design, detailed design, and construction support.
  • Engage in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats
  • Utilize computing technologies for the development of three-dimensional models of structural systems and provide markups for junior engineers/designers
  • Support project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors
  • Participating in client project requirement meetings and value analysis
  • Support preparation, and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents
  • Be responsible for the preparation of structural calculations using company standard software, and proprietary manufacturer software
  • Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the structural group
  • Work on multiple projects, simultaneously with virtual teams as needed
  • Assist in project administration including, writing reports, gathering information, drafting proposals, drafting correspondence, tracking project costs and completing progress reports.
  • Review Contractor's shop drawing and submittals regarding structural work, investigating and developing engineered solutions to Contractor's Requests for Information.
  • Assist technical staff in field activities including, structural observations, monitoring, and other fieldwork
  • Work in a manner to ensure your personal safety and that of fellow employees by following company health and safety guidelines and policies.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Working knowledge and application of structural design codes, standards, and applicable building codes
  • General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications
  • Working knowledge of structural systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness, manage time to meet project budgets and schedules and take responsibility for structural project work
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior staff
  • Solid understanding of structural engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, provide examples of written communication ability
  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Requires directing production of 3D models and 2D structural engineering drawings using Revit and AutoCad
  • Requires experience using structural engineering/finite element analysis software such as STAAD, RAM, SAP2000, RISA
  • Working knowledge of ACI 318, ACI 350, IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 24, applicable local Codes and local ordinances
  • Working knowledge of USACE Engineering Manuals related to stability of concrete structures, reinforced concrete hydraulic structures, hydraulic steel structures, floodwalls & retaining walls, and other relevant design manuals is preferred.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil or Structural Engineering required; master's degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer License required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Experience desired but not required includes the analysis, design, and inspection of spillways, spillway gates, locks, miter gates, and hydropower generation facilities, and/or design of water and wastewater treatment facilities

Position Requirements

Typical office environment, to be in person initially full time and in person a minimum of five days per week, working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Remote working provisions following an initial on-boarding period to depend on project and Client requirements and supervisory requirements.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
