Job Overview & Responsibilities

The ULA Advanced Programs (AP) team is a multidisciplinary group that helps shape the evolution of future ULA launch vehicles, performs architectural trade studies, develops concepts for future product offerings, supports proposal development, creates technology development roadmaps, and develops new technologies through prototype builds. As a Strength Analyst for AP, you will be developing and evaluating structural systems for future enhancements for Vulcan-Centaur and other launch vehicles.

Job responsibilities include the following:
  • Performing strength, fatigue and fracture analysis of structural components, including non-linear analysis.
  • Create analysis models, perform hand calculations and have an understanding of analysis best practices to provide strength inputs and recommendations for new design concepts.
  • Review and approve 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs / drawings and 2-D drawing changes for a variety of propulsion, fluid system and mechanical system components.
  • Make engineering design recommendations with consideration of thermal, mechanical and pressure loading using appropriate material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
  • Document analysis results in strength reports.
  • Support internal peer reviews, table top reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
  • Support fast paced design/analysis cycles and be able to evaluate hardware non-conformances to support production activities.
  • Work independently and coordinate efforts across functional and product teams.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university
  • Experience or familiarity with the following tools/software
    • NASTRAN (Static, Modal, Dynamic and Non-Linear Analysis Solutions)
    • FEMAP pre/post processor
    • NX CAD/Simulation
    • NASGRO fracture mechanics tool
    • Unix/Linux mainframe based analysis tools
    • MathCad
    • ABAQUS
    • Matlab
    • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to make design recommendations based on analysis results/experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential
  • General understanding of materials and material properties
  • Experience with Structural Analysis (Tanks, Adapters, Brackets)
  • Experience analyzing propulsion hardware (tubing, ducting, flex joints)
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Experience working with component suppliers and development of spec requirements
  • Understanding of fatigue/fracture analysis tools and methodology
  • Understanding of bolted joint modeling and analysis
  • Understanding of GD&T standards and principles
  • Understanding of analysis best practices and underlying assumptions
  • Understanding of basic hand calculations
  • Strong communication skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience running/creating analysis automation and pre/post processing scripts using the following tools
    • Unix, Matlab, Python, Excel
  • Experience with static/dynamic testing and model correlation
  • Experience with structural optimization techniques for mass savings
  • Experience integrating with system level analysis models (coupled loads models)
  • General knowledge of fabrication methods for mechanical hardware, such as machining, welding, processing and assembly
  • General familiarity with mechanical support equipment


Summary Salary Range (for ULA - Denveronly): $99,604.00 - $166,007.00

Please note that the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon a candidate's experience and qualifications, as well as internal equity, market and business considerations. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in addition to base pay.

Additionally, most salaried ULA team members work a "9/80 schedule," meaning they enjoy every other Friday off.
