Job Responsibilities
THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT STP OFFICERS ONLY.

Enforces state and federal laws governing Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV). Protects the motoring public by preventing collisions, removing unsafe drivers and vehicles from South Carolina highways. Protects South Carolina's environment from unsafe hazardous materials transportation practices. Prevents the premature deterioration of our bridges through size and weight enforcement.

Effectively manages and supervises all the activities within the region. Prioritizes and organizes work schedules and assignments for the subordinate personnel based on crash statistics and in high commercial motor vehicle traffic areas.

Oversees the enforcement of state motor vehicle laws and regulations with primary focus on commercial vehicles within assigned region. Maintains working relationships with other government agencies and assists them and the public with enforcement and safety concerns involving commercial motor vehicles. Conducts and/or assists with incident investigations and investigates complaints.

Maintains knowledge and advise subordinates with regards to Motor Vehicle Laws and CMV federal and state regulations, Department of Public Safety (DPS) and STP Policies, the STP Manual of Operations, and rules and regulations.

Responsible for reviewing all required activity, documents, and reports created by STP personnel under his/her supervision. Ensures STP console and SC Enterprise Information System (SCEIS) are completed in a timely manner and approved. Oversees the evidence process. Conducts periodic ticket and video audits and maintains all proper documentation needed for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Ensures all personnel equipment is suitable and well maintained for duty.

Attends continuous in-service training for recertification and maintaining all state and federal certifications. Ensures subordinates also maintain these certifications as required.

Prepares Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) reviews and submits to headquarters correctly and on a timely basis.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements - A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

• Must have a high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
• Must be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
• Must must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a State Transport Police Officer.
• Must have attained permanent status in the rank of State Transport Police Corporal for at least six (6) continuous months.
• Required to attend in-service training held by the department as well as any local and/or out of state managerial/supervisory courses deemed necessary for the position.

Additional Requirements

Must have the ability to lead and firmly but courteously deal with the public and subordinates.
Must be able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Must have thorough knowledge of state, federal motor carrier, and traffic laws.
Employee must have proficient administrative ability and knowledge of State Transport Police methods and procedures; must have the ability to plan, organize, assign, direct, and evaluate overall operations of assigned unit. Manages and supervises large groups of personnel in field enforcement. Has broad latitude for independent action in management and supervision of subordinates. Must maintain regular contact with superiors and STP Headquarters administrative staff.
