Job ResponsibilitiesTHIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT SCDPS OFFICERS ONLY.
Under the general supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, the selected candidate will coordinate all training for the State Transport Police Division. The selected candidate will manage subordinate personnel. Manages and coordinates all training for STP through scheduling of required training, recertification and formulating instructor development. Ensures all STP instructors recertification required by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) are current in all areas of basic, advanced and other areas of instructor development. Assists with the research and development of new training programs in the area of commercial vehicle enforcement. Maintains an inventory of all equipment, uniforms, and supplies needed for STP trainees. Serves as the liaison with SCCJA staff for basic and advanced training.
Manages and coordinates the delivery of specialized and advanced training courses to employees to include, but not limited to, SCDPS mandatory supervisory training (first-line, mid-level, and executive), North American Standard (NAS) training, in-service training, and mandatory Incident Command System (ICS) training. Assists the Command Staff in identifying areas of job-related training deficiencies.
Conducts research and development of innovative law enforcement curricula at the advanced level with a goal to evaluate current training programs making needed updates, revisions, and modifications to existing programs.
Supervises and manages subordinate personnel. Prepares Employee Performance Management System reviews (EPMS) and submits to headquarters accurately and in a timely manner.
Attends all In-Service training and advanced training to maintain all Officer and Instructor Certifications. Maintains a level of Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Inspections as outlined by the Administrative Lieutenant.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum and Additional RequirementsState Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

- Must be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
- Must have attained permanent status in the rank of State Transport Police Corporal for at least six (6) continuous months.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations, especially those affecting commercial motor vehicles.
- Knowledge of commercial motor vehicle safety inspections and procedures, Hazardous Material regulations, and size & weight laws.
- Extensive administrative abilities and strong organizational skills.
Additional Requirements:Must possess or be able to successfully complete SCCJA Basic Instructor Development Certification within one (1) year.
Be familiar with SCDPS Training requirements/procedures and willing to obtain identified North American Standard (NAS) Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Instructor Certification(s) within 18 months.
Possess knowledge of STP Operational Procedures. Have the ability to plan, organize, assign, direct, and evaluate work assignments.
Above average oral & written communication skills.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of government, the private sector, and general public.
Must hold and maintain Class I Law Enforcement Certification and NAS Certifications.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time in inclement weather and have the flexibility to lift and carry approximately 100 lbs.
Required to work various shifts including weekends and/or holidays which often requires travel and lodging
Also will be required to give and receive verbal instructions often from a distance of approximately 60 feet.
