Job Description:

State & Local Tax Manager- National Tax

The National State & Local Tax (SALT) professional serves as a firmwide technical resource, providing leadership, guidance, and practical solutions across all areas of state taxation. This role partners closely with client-facing teams and practice offices to monitor evolving state tax developments, address complex technical matters, strengthen compliance capabilities, and translate technical tax concepts into actionable guidance for both internal and external audiences.

Location: East Coast preferred. Must be located near an office.

An ideal candidate will:

  • Enjoy partnering with other tax professionals in the firm, researching complex state tax issues, and analyzing new developments to provide guidance and planning recommendations.


  • Be a prolific writer who enjoys creating thought leadership on key tax issues and working with marketing to ensure a high level of information is disseminated internally and externally.


What you will do:

  • Conduct in-depth technical research and analysis of complex state and local tax matters across multiple jurisdictions and tax types.


  • Research and interpret statutes, regulations, administrative guidance, case law, and other authoritative sources to develop technically sound positions and practical recommendations.


  • Monitor and evaluate new and proposed state tax legislation, regulations, administrative guidance, and judicial decisions, and assess their potential impact on clients and the firm's tax practice.


  • Serve as a national technical resource, collaborating with practice leaders, subject-matter specialists, and client-facing teams to provide guidance on complex, significant, or emerging state and local tax matters.


  • Draft and review internal and external tax alerts, technical updates, articles, presentations, and other thought-leadership materials, translating complex tax concepts into clear, concise, and actionable guidance.


  • Develop and deliver technical training, webinars, and other educational programs to share knowledge and enhance SALT capabilities across the firm.


  • Identify compliance opportunities to improve quality, consistency, and efficiency by developing and maintaining standardized SALT tools, templates, processes, and technical guidance for practice offices and client-facing teams.


  • Build and maintain strong relationships across service lines, practice offices, and engagement teams to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and consistent application of state tax guidance.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required; Master's in Taxation or LLM preferred.


  • CPA and/or JD required; JD/LLM highly preferred.


  • 5+ years of experience in state and local tax.


  • Experience in a client-serving professional services firm preferred.


  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting technical memoranda and tax analyses.


  • Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills.


  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.


  • Interest in developing specialized expertise and serving as a technical resource within a national tax organization.


The pay rate ranges for this position are listed below. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of relevant factors including but not limited to applicant's skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.

The national pay rate range is $122,840 to $239,560

In California: pay rate range is $135,120 to $239,560
