Full Job Description
We are looking for a Staff Software Development Engineer, Provisioning Platform to join our Zero Trust Exchange department. This is a hybrid position based in San Jose, CA (HQ), reporting to the Sr. Director, Software Development Engineering.
The Staff Software Development Engineer will help build Zscaler's next-generation Provisioning Platform, supporting SKU provisioning, entitlements, workflow orchestration, subscription lifecycle management, and self-service experiences across Zscaler products. This is a hands-on backend engineering role focused on building reliable Java/Spring Boot services, APIs, workflow-driven systems, and cloud-native platform capabilities, including support for Agentic AI-assisted provisioning experiences.
What you'll do (Role Expectations)
- Design and develop backend services for provisioning, licensing, entitlements, approvals, orchestration workflows, and subscription lifecycle management
- Build API-first services using Java/Spring Boot, REST, gRPC, OpenAPI, OAuth2, JWT, and secure service-to-service communication
- Develop reliable workflow-driven and event-driven systems using asynchronous processing, retries, failure handling, durable state management, Kafka/RabbitMQ, and workflow orchestration tools
- Implement platform capabilities that support Agentic AI-assisted guided workflows, recommendations, troubleshooting, and automation
- Build reusable components, SDKs, tooling, automation, observability, and operational controls to improve platform reliability and developer productivity
Who You Are (Success Profile)
- You act like an owner. Your passion for the mission fuels your bias for action. You operate with integrity because you genuinely care about the outcome. You adapt to what's needed, navigating seamlessly between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.
- You are a problem-solver. You seek out challenges because you are energized by finding solutions, knowing that solving the hard problems delivers the biggest impact.
- You operate with urgency. You understand that in a high-growth environment, speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. You have a relentless focus on execution and a bias for action, delivering high-impact results quickly to win for the customer and the team.
- You are driven by innovation. You have a deep curiosity for how things work and are energized by solving complex technical challenges. You believe in the power of technology to accelerate transformation and are always looking for a better, more secure, and scalable way.
- You are a pragmatic builder. You are obsessed with creating, iterating, and shipping. You aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves and build the first version yourself, balancing the drive for technical excellence with the need to deliver value to users quickly.
What We're Looking for (Minimum Qualifications)
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building backend services, platform systems, distributed applications, or cloud-native services
- Strong backend development experience with Java and Spring Boot, including microservices and production APIs
- Experience building REST APIs, backend workflows, cloud-native applications, and services deployed using Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines
- Good understanding of distributed systems concepts such as resiliency, idempotency, retries, fault tolerance, asynchronous processing, and eventual consistency
- Experience with Kafka/RabbitMQ or similar messaging systems, PostgreSQL, Redis, observability tools, authentication/authorization, RBAC, and audit logging
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience with provisioning, licensing, entitlement, commerce, billing, subscription lifecycle systems, internal platforms, or developer tooling
- Experience with workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal, Cadence, Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster, as well as event-driven architecture or domain-driven design
- Exposure to Agentic AI, LLM-based workflows, RAG, tool calling, AI-assisted development tools, Python/FastAPI, Go, React, Next.js, GraphQL, or Material UI
