Full Job Description
The opportunity

As a Staff Software Engineer for GI, you'll help shape an end-to-end digital care experience for people living with GI conditions. You'll lead rapid experiments to validate assumptions, navigate complex technical and product challenges, and turn what you learn into a reliable, scalable product that can improve members' health at meaningful scale.

At Hinge Health, staff engineers are senior technical contributors who lead through code, technical judgment, and influence. You'll set direction for critical systems, contribute to production code daily, raise the quality bar, and mentor other engineers without moving into people management. You'll partner closely with senior leadership and teams across Product, Design, and Marketing in San Francisco, Montreal, and Bangalore. Learn more about the staff engineer archetypes that thrive at Hinge Health.
What You'll Accomplish

Below are example impact areas over your first 3, 6, and 12 months. At Hinge Health, we regularly adjust priorities to respond to member needs and business incentives, so these are illustrative rather than fixed checklists.
  • In your first 3 months:
    • Help define the GI product line from scratch.
    • Build strong partnerships with Product, Design, and Marketing to align on the strategy, experimentation roadmap, and success metrics.
    • Lead the technical roadmap development for the new GI product line spanning AI systems, UX interfaces, business logic middletier, hardware integration and where to loop in the board-certified clinician for in-person support to members.
    • Develop prototypes and proof-of-concepts for the hardest parts of the new product line
  • In your first 6 months:
    • Build the GI product as a minimum lovable product (MLP) delivering a significant & measurable health improvement for members.
    • Mentor and pair with engineers on the pod, helping them grow in engineering best practices, code quality, and experimentation mindset.
    • Create engineering best practices for CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and client performance across the entire stack.
    • Personally develop the hardest, most challenging software elements in the product roadmap.
  • In your first year:
    • Have launched the new product and already work on iterations to adapt it using real member feedback post-launch.
    • Drive cross-team initiatives to improve the end-to-end journey for GI end users
    • Continuously raise engineering standards on the pod (testing, observability, reliability, accessibility, performance) and help scale the team's impact as the product and membership grow.
Who You Are
  • 0->1 Builder: We are looking for an engineer with a track record of building brand new products from scratch.
  • Talent magnet:someone who is recognized as a leader and other people want to work with.
  • AI-Driven development: You have been using the latest AI software development techniques (ex: teams of AI Agents) and continuously look for new AI techniques that can improve your productivity.
  • You move fast, know how to balance innovation vs reuse, and deliver clear business results.
  • Hands-on engineer: You're reading and writing code across the tech stack (e.g., React Native, BFF/full-stack web, GraphQL, AI Agents, Computer Vision, Medical Device Integration, etc), and you use that fluency to coach, review, and set technical direction.
  • Experiment-driven operator: You think in terms of hypotheses, sample sizes, and decision rules, and you can run a dense A/B experimentation roadmap without sacrificing quality.
  • Team mentor and collaborator: You enjoy leveling up a strong but more junior team through pairing, code reviews, design discussions, and clear written communication.
  • Owner mindset: You think in terms of systems and business impact, not just tickets-you're comfortable taking a problem from idea through launch, measurement, and iteration.
  • Inclusive team builder: You create clear expectations, give direct feedback, and foster a culture where engineers can do the best work of their careers.
Basic Qualifications
  • A minimum of 4+ years of practical software engineering experience, including building and shipping user-facing applications in production.
  • A minimum Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or foreign equivalent).
  • 2+ years of hands-on React Native experience building mobile applications at scale.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technologies: Experience building in large React Native codebases, TypeScript/Node.js & Go backends, GraphQL, AWS services (e.g., Lambda, SQS, SNS, SageMaker), tooling for client performance, render optimization, devops and app architecture patterns.
  • Product Integration mindset: History operating a product surface that integrates across multiple platforms owned by different teams.
  • Track record of running experiments (e.g., A/B tests or multivariate tests) on core product surfaces and using results to drive roadmap decisions.
  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript/JavaScript, React Native, and modern mobile development tooling; familiarity with backend services (e.g., Node/TypeScript, GraphQL, or similar) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow other engineers through code reviews, design collaboration, and technical guidance.
  • Comfort collaborating with product, design, and data/analytics partners to define metrics, interpret results, and refine experiences.
  • Experience developing consumer-facing apps used by millions/billions of users.
  • Regulated environments: Experience working within healthcare (HIPAA) or other highly regulated domains involving sensitive member data.
