Job Description

Vacancy Status:

This posting is not for an existing vacancy within the organization and is open to new applications. (New Head Count)

AI Disclosure:

As part of the application process, Artificial Intelligence will be used in the hiring process for this role

Hybrid:

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

About The Role:

General Motors is transforming how we develop and validate embedded controls and software as we move toward our Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion vision. We are seeking a Staff Software Architect - Mechatronics Controls Simulation to lead the technical architecture of simulation environments supporting GM's Vehicle Body Controls domain (vehicle access, cabin thermal, occupant positioning, occupant protection, lighting, visibility, vehicle state, and related functions) within the Virtualization & SIL Integration (VnSI) organization.

In this role, you will own the end-to-end simulation architecture for the Vehicle Body Controls domain, define and govern CoSim packages, and lead variant and configuration management across programs and model years. You will partner closely with Simulation Integration Engineers (SIEs), System Integration Architects, Software Architects, and SW Quality Architects to ensure our simulation solutions are scalable, robust, and fully integrated into continuous integration (CI) pipelines for GM's Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Architecture.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical and architectural leadership for the Vehicle Body
Controls domain simulation, setting the long-term vision and roadmap for
    simulation capabilities and infrastructure.
  • Define and maintain the simulation architecture for the Vehicle Body
Controls domain, addressing functional and non-functional requirements
(performance, fidelity, scalability, reusability, maintainability) and align
with SDV and Mechatronics Infrastructure direction.
  • Define the variant and configuration management strategy for simulation
packages across programs, regions, model years, and option content (e.g.,
trim levels, content packages, regulatory variants).
  • Collaborate with System Engineers and SIEs to define Simulation Bills of
Materials (SIMBOMs) that map program test requirements and feature
content into concrete CoSim assets for each configuration.
  • Establish and maintain standards for simulation package structure,
documentation, versioning, and release notes to ensure traceability and
ease of deployment across virtual test environments and CI pipelines.
  • Own the simulation architecture for behavioral modeling for systems
outside of the test boundary, defining how networks, ECUs, and vehicle
    behaviors are represented in simulation.
  • Define the architectural strategy and technical enablers required to scale
CI/CD across simulation packages, virtual ECUs, and test environments.
  • Partner with pipeline and tools teams to align test packages with CI quality
gates (e.g., build, smoke tests, regression suites, coverage criteria) and
ensure failures are actionable by teams.
  • Establish architecture governance processes, conduct design reviews, and
drive alignment across simulation, software, and systems engineering
    organizations.
  • Contribute to, and in some cases lead, training and lunch-and-learn
sessions on simulation architecture, simulation packaging, configuration
    management, and CI practices.
    Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Computer / Mechatronics Engineering,
    Computer Science, or related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in embedded software, systems
engineering, or controls, with substantial time spent on simulation,
SIL/HIL, or co-simulation for automotive or similar safety-critical domains.
  • Strong skills in at least one software language used in simulation tooling
(e.g., C/C++, Python) and experience working with automated build and CI
tools (e.g., Git, GitHub Actions, gcc/gdb, Eclipse or similar).
  • Proven experience as a Systems Architect, Software/System Engineer, or
simulation technical lead with responsibility for architecture across
    multiple programs or domains.
  • Deep hands-on experience with test environments, including integration of
controls, plant models, and communication models for embedded
    controllers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical discussions, drive
consensus, and make trade-offs across performance, quality, and delivery.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related
    field.
  • Prior Staff-level (or equivalent) experience defining and leading the
architecture of complex embedded or simulation systems that span
multiple Electronic Control Units (ECUs), vehicle domains, and feature sets.
  • Experience designing or operating continuous integration pipelines for
embedded software, including quality gates, promotion strategies, and
    automated regression selection.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink for plant and/or behavior model
development and integration, and familiarity with FMU/FMI and SSP
    standards.
  • Solid knowledge of automotive communication technologies (CAN, LIN,
automotive Ethernet) and experience modeling or configuring network
    behavior in simulation.
  • Hands-on experience designing or leading variant and configuration
management strategies for embedded software, simulation, or test
    environments.
  • Familiarity with AUTOSAR layered software architecture and integration of
    AUTOSAR-based ECUs into CoSim environments.
  • Experience with cloud-hosted simulation / virtualization platforms and
scaling test execution on shared infrastructure.
