Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Responsible for the efficient and accurate preparation and dispensation of medications and other pharmaceuticals according to established operational and chemical procedures, and as prescribed by physicians. Oversee and closely review the work of technical support personnel.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
  • Dispense medications to inpatients, outpatients and employees in compliance with prescriptions; provide information on medication usage to patients to facilitate the healing process.
  • Efficiently and accurately processes medication orders and stock requests: prepares STAT and ASAP orders within the defined time limits; data enters orders quickly and completely into the pharmacy computer system; maintains complete and accurate patient medication profiles.
  • Advise physicians as to the use benefits of the pharmacy pharmacokinetic dosing service (e.g. aminoglycosides and vancomycin) and anticoagulant dosing service.
  • Assist in providing clinical experience to pharmacy students, rounding with them along with physicians; instruct them and evaluates their performance and skills.
  • Assess and advise physicians of accepted formulary products, alternative substitutions and/or recommend more efficacious medications for patient therapy.
  • Serve as a source of medication information education for Physicians, nurses, patients, and other ancillary personnel.
  • Supervise and is responsible for work performed by pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns on a daily basis.
  • Provides accurate, efficient, and friendly service to the nursing units. Supports and assists the other members of the decentralized team. Completes the functions identified in the decentralized job descriptions and assist all associates with all other functions to assure complete, timely and accurate pharmacy services.
  • Compounding and supervising the compounding of Non-sterile medications up to and including Moderate Compounding as defined by USP and Sterile medications up to and including Medium Risk as defined by USP
  • Handle, dispense, verify, and manipulate hazardous medications as defined by USP to meet patient care needs.
  • Compounding caregivers adhere to the prescription or medical order for the strength, quality and purity of compounding preparations. Compounded products are packaged, labeled and dispensed according to current laws and regulations.


Job Requirements

General Requirements
• Valid State of Michigan Pharmacy license in good standing with the State of Michigan • Valid State of Michigan Controlled Substance license in good standing with the State of Michigan.

Work Experience
• Hospital experience preferred

Education
• Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy. Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
• Demonstrates effective oral, written and phone communication skills • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
