Full Job Description
Staff Pharmacist

Pharmacist Interprets physician prescriptions and medication orders to dispense the medication. Acts as a drug information resource to clients, physicians and healthcare professionals. Performs all other pharmaceuticals needs for client care by performing the related duties.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescriber to ensure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients needed.


  • Oversee the compounding of the medications using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.


  • Collaborate with prescribing physicians to design unique, patient-specific therapies, such as allergy-free, dye-free, or specific-strength medications, for a Formulation Design


  • Adhere strictly to state Board of Pharmacy regulations and USP standards including USP (795 ), USP (797), and or USP( 800) as applicable.


  • Monitors all posting onto the client profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better client care received.


  • Directs pharmacy personnel engaged in admixing, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.


  • Answers questions and provides information to physicians, clients and other healthcare professionals on appropriate use of medication, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.


  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.


  • Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.


  • Assists in teaching programs.


  • Endorses policies and procedures for pharmacy operations.


  • Responsible for the maintenance and proper operations of equipment and supplies in the work areas as applicable.


  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.


  • Enters data into the computer system (Digital RX) such as client, prescribed medications and cost, and maintains client profiles and charge system.


  • Reviews and monitors drug therapy that requires dosing adjustments as authorized by the physician.


  • Provides pharmaceutical care to all ages of clients. Must understand that there are dosage variations between newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adult and geriatric clients and know where to find appropriate information.


  • Participates in organizational performance improvement activities.


  • Assists the Director of the Pharmacy on special assignments.


  • Supervises at least 1-2 members of the pharmacy staff on a daily basis.


  • Assists the Director of the Pharmacy with responsibilities in accordance with Pharmacy's mission, policy and any applicable laws.


  • Responsibilities may include and will not be limited to:


  • Training personnel.


  • Planning, assigning and directing work.


  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Professional Requirements:

  • Represents the Pharmacy in a positive and professional manner in the community.

  • Provides in-service education to clinical staff.

  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the organization.


Regulatory Requirements:

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or Bachelor of Pharmacy degree or equivalent.


  • Licensed in the State of California, State Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacist.


  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience or subsequent training.


  • Includes appropriate certificates or licenses required for the position.


Language Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication is required. Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret Pharmacy related journals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions to patients and employees. Also ability to respond to common inquires or complaint from patients or regulatory agencies.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Must be able to apply necessary advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents and logarithms.


  • Ability to apply mathematical operation; to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis.


  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.


  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.


  • Deal with several abstract variables.


  • Working knowledge of computers, automated pharmacy systems and Pharmacy Software or the willingness to learn.


  • Must be self-directed, motivated and capable of supervising support personnel
