Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing fully accredited, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. UHS manages the student health insurance and workers' compensation insurance programs.

Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Pharmacy Director, the Staff Pharmacist is responsible for provision and documentation of pharmacy-related services to patients according to standards established by UC Berkeley's University Health Services Pharmacy, including order verification, prescribing under a pharmacist-directed protocol, counseling in accordance with California Board of Pharmacy standards and other duties as designated.

They will possess strong professionalism, credibility, commitment to high standards, innovation, independence and accountability. They will have good conflict resolution skills, excellent customer service, and comfortability interacting with the many diverse student populations within UC Berkeley, including people of color, immigrants, persons of different abilities, sexual and gender diversity, etc.

Responsibilities
  • Reviews, interprets and evaluates medication orders and identifies, prevents and resolves potential or actual drug related problems.
  • Checks for accuracy all medications/prescriptions prepared by the technical staff prior to dispensing the medication to the patient and makes appropriate corrections when required.
  • Communicates with patients regarding prescribed therapies to promote patient outcomes in accordance with California Board of Pharmacy standards.
  • Prescribes, delegates, and coordinates pharmaceutical care based on the patient's diagnosis, age, dietary, and physiological and psychological needs.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy pharmacy environment by adhering to organization standards and policies, and to legal regulations; alerting others regarding potential concerns.
  • Provides appropriate recommendations regarding new or existing medications, to ensure optimal patient care at the lowest cost to both the patient and healthcare system.
  • Provide drug information to other healthcare professionals.
  • Additional projects and activities as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Education
  • PharmD or a B.S. in Pharmacy
Licenses/Certification
  • Registered Pharmacist - State of California
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of electronic / medical records systems.
  • Ability to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost professionalism and respect.
  • Critical thinker with advanced analytical abilities to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to effectively work within a collaborative team-focused environment.
  • Ability to learn and apply company policies consistently, seeking out guidance when necessary, is required.
  • Active/Good Standing Pharmacist license in California
  • Working knowledge of federal and state-specific controlled substance and pharmacy laws, rules, and regulations
  • Strong ability to listen actively, consider all points of view with an open mind, soliciting and incorporating ideas when appropriate.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification required within 90 days

  • Pharmacist Furnished Naloxone Protocol

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
  • The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 2 ($163,949.24) - Step 7 ($180,958.30).
  • This is a 80%, full-time (32 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
