Full Job Description

Who’ll You Be Joining:

Our Hardware team is made up of engineers with a wide variety of specialties, skill sets, backgrounds, and experiences ranging from HVAC control to RF design, digital logic, avionics, test fixtures, embedded software development, PCB layout, and power electronics. They aim to bring their wide experience to the cross-functional squads that they are a part of, with a focus on collaboration, learning, development.

As a Staff Hardware Engineer, your responsibilities will include leading the development of new electrical products and systems from concept into production, ensuring designs are manufacturable, reliable, and compliant with industry standards. This role combines deep technical ownership with cross-functional leadership, driving complex programs from concept through mass production with a focus on quality, cost, and schedule.

Working in the Hardware Engineering department, your involvement in product development will go far beyond circuit design as you will also be expected to shape technical direction across programs and help raise the engineering bar for the broader team. Your understanding of the often-conflicting demands of industrial design, manufacturability, thermal management, battery life, signal integrity, and user experience will enable you to create elegant solutions to difficult system-level problems. A strong technical background spanning high-speed digital design, analog instrumentation, RF systems, and power electronics will allow you to move efficiently from architecture and schematic design through validation and manufacturing readiness.

To create reliable and lasting products for our customers, it is also important that Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and Design for Test are embedded throughout the development cycle. Working closely with engineers across embedded, manufacturing, test, mechanical, and operations teams, you will contribute to collaborative engineering decisions spanning system architecture, production test strategy, thermal design, antenna performance, mechanical integration, and compliance. Your insights, technical judgment, and mentorship will be instrumental to the cooperative effort that is foundational to ecobee product development.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

Project Leadership:

  • Lead technical execution for electrical and system design through EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP phases.
  • Partner closely with design, manufacturing, embedded, supply chain, and quality teams to resolve cross-functional trade-offs.
  • Influence technical plans, risk management, and execution priorities for complex NPI programs.

Design for Excellence (DfX):

  • Contribute to and help shape architecture-level decisions for new product designs.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and guide feasibility studies for future product applications.
  • Own electrical subsystem design for manufacturability, testability, cost, reliability, and compliance.
  • Define production test methodologies and support development of test fixture strategies for NPIs.
  • Design and build prototype hardware to validate new concepts and de-risk critical design decisions.
  • Drive PCB layout requirements and perform rigorous design and layout reviews.

Electrical Process Development:

  • Support robust electrical development processes including DFMEA, PFMEA, and data-driven validation practices.
  • Develop test plans covering electrical performance, reliability, and manufacturing readiness.

Quality & Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to applicable electrical standards (FCC, IPC, UL, IEC, RoHS, etc.) and internal quality systems.
  • Lead root cause investigations for electrical failures and drive corrective actions that improve both in-market and future NPI designs.

Supplier & Component Management:

  • Perform component research and work with vendors to identify suitable parts that balance performance, availability, cost, and risk.
  • Support supplier selection and qualification for electrical components and assemblies.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Capture lessons learned and apply best practices to future electrical NPI programs.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, design simplification, and process optimization.
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to stronger technical standards, reviews, and development practices across the team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in NPI, hardware, or electrical engineering roles, preferably in consumer electronics or other high-volume industries.
  • Hands-on experience with schematic and PCB design, assembly, and test, with strength in several of the following areas:
    • Memory architectures, including eMMC, DDR3, DDR4, and related interfaces
    • Low-power and IoT sensor design
    • RF systems (Wi-Fi, BLE, sub-GHz), including antenna design and FCC certification
    • Analog and power circuit design using MOSFETs, TRIACs, and BJTs
    • Display, power supply, and capacitive touch design
  • Proficiency with Altium and circuit simulation tools (for example, SPICE); experience with SolidWorks and Python-based data analysis is an asset.
  • Experience defining production test strategies and supporting high-throughput manufacturing test solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical standards and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of RF principles and hands-on experience with lab instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical problem-solving across cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and a collaborative approach to mentoring and technical leadership.
  • Just so you know: The hired candidate will be required to complete a background check.
