The P IV PS RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE ENGINEERING Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional) This posting seeks to fill at either the Staff Engineer (Boiler Inspector) or Senior Engineer (Boiler Inspector); whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

STAFF ENGINEER (BOILER INSEPCTOR)

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides field engineering and technical consulting services for enhancing boiler safety, performance and reliability; troubleshooting and resolving operational problems; and optimizing inspection, maintenance and operational practices. Ensures compliance with state boiler and pressure vessel regulations and applicable technical standards. Expected to become a National Board Commissioned Inspector with 12 months of employment and National Board R Endorsement within 18 months of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Schedules, Coordinates and Performs internal and external inspections of boilers and pressure vessels, piping and pressure relief devices.
• Provides technical support for overhauls and equipment repairs to ensure Quality Assurance and adherence to jurisdictional and code compliance.
• Provides recommendations based on thorough review of maintenance and operational records and data, past and present, and latest industry and/or OEM standards and practices.
• Provide on-site technical support.
• Maintains a constant vigilance for opportunities to improve the department's safety, operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
• Develops, monitors and refines condition assessment programs for critical plant equipment, using state-of-the-art techniques where appropriate.
• Investigates equipment failures and enlists support of other departments and/or consultants as needed, to analyze and resolve the problem(s).
• Supports planning of outage work, including maintenance recommendations and vendor/consultant coordination.
• Maintains appropriate records and statistics and makes timely distribution of them.
• Supports economic evaluations as necessary, including both theoretical and actual cost/benefit analyses.
• Provides training for department and process area personnel as the need arises.
• Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce in support of quality initiatives and Company values.
• Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused and well-informed workforce.
• Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of engineering fundamentals as applied to Boilers and Pressure Vessels in the appropriate specialty areas (i.e., physics, chemistry, thermodynamics and welding materials), normally acquired through advanced, college level courses or equivalent experience.
• Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, industry and company regulations, codes and practices.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, etc.)

Skills Requirements

• Ability to perform, as individual contributor and as a member of work teams.
• General troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform root-cause analyses.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Hawaii or another U.S. state. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety needs.
• Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
• Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with entities within and external to the Company.
• In-depth analytical and computational skills for technical writing, statistical computations, and economic analysis.
• Inspection, welding and/or non-destructive testing experience are desirable.

Experience Requirements

• Several (3 - 5 years) in plant operations and/or maintenance, with emphasis in inspection, condition monitoring and assessment, troubleshooting and maintenance planning.

SENIOR ENGINEER (BOILER INSPECTOR)

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides expert field engineering and technical consulting services for enhancing boiler performance and reliability; troubleshooting and resolving operational problems; and optimizing maintenance and operational practices. Ensures compliance with state boiler and pressure vessel regulations and applicable technical standards. Expected to become a National Board Commissioned Inspector and National Board R Endorsement within 6 months of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Schedules, coordinates and performs internal and external inspections of boilers and pressure vessels, piping and pressure relief devices.
• Provides technical support for overhauls and equipment repairs to ensure Quality Assurance and adherence to jurisdictional and code compliance and cost-effective maintenance.
• Provides recommendations based on thorough review of maintenance and operational records and data, past and present, and latest industry and/or OEM standards and practices.
• Provide on-site technical support.
• Coordinates and supervises other inspector personnel to ensure strategic goals and objectives are met.
• Research, coordinates and directs complex technical assignments expected to result in new or improved inspection, operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
• Serves as technical consultant to Maui and Hawaiian Islands.
• Develops, monitors and refines condition assessment programs, using state-of-the-art techniques where appropriate.
• Investigates equipment failures and enlists support of other departments and/or consultants as needed, to analyze and resolve the problem(s).
• Maintains appropriate department records and statistics and makes timely distribution of them.

• Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, industry and company regulations, codes and practices.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and mainframe systems and related software applications (e.g., spreadsheets, word-processing, project management, etc.).

• American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and non-destructive testing experience desirable.
• Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Field Engineer highly preferable.

• Several (5 - 8 years) in plant operation and/or maintenance, with emphasis in inspections, equipment overhaul, troubleshooting, and maintenance planning.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Staff Engineer (Boiler Inspector) [Req ID 10678] position is $99,900.00 to $127,500.00. The hiring range for the Senior Engineer (Boiler Inspector) [Req ID 10678] position is $109,900.00 to $142,600.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
